About this listen
A Time Travellers Guide to Ancient Rome - by one of the best historians of the ancient world
Living in ancient Rome was superbly and vividly recorded by Rome's historians, philosophers, and poets who were acutely aware of the seething and voluptuous nature of a city that ruled the known world. Through the words of Tacitus, Seneca, Martial, and a host of others including ordinary Romans, Guy de la Bédoyère takes the reader into a world of violent politics, civil disorder, unspeakably brutal entertainments, extravagance, decadence, eroticism, exotica, and staggering inequality, participated in daily by the Roman people from the hyper-rich elite to the lowliest slaves. Populus places those who experienced Rome in person at the forefront of their story, from the rabble-rousing senator Clodius Pulcher to Pliny the Elder and Hortensia who defended the rights of women in court to the ex-slave and celebrity baker Eurysaces.

Lacklustre
Giving a poor review is not pleasant, but it has to be said that this is a deeply uninspiring work in which poor organisation inevitably leads to tedious repetition. It is written in worthy but pedestrian prose, and is read in an equally pedestrian way by the narrator. If Roman history is your thing, give other authors serious consideration before parting with a credit for this one.

A bit disappointing
The information in this book is great... And the text is well written... It is,however, presented in an only very loosely structured way. While it was a pleasant background to my life for as long as it lasted, I don't think i will remember much of its contents

Roman history - brilliant
I enjoyed the book very much and thought the narration was fantastic. There were the odd bits and pieces I had to listen to again before continuing but that was mainly due to my circumstances. So the moral is, pick a quiet time to read it even if knky listening to one chapter at a time!
