About this listen
No one in Bradley, North Carolina, is exactly crying into their sweet tea over the murder of Parke Stockard. Certainly not retired schoolteacher Myrtle Clover.
Upon discovering the corpse, Myrtle is struck - not with grief, but a brilliant idea! Solving the murder would prove to everyone - especially her son Red, the police chief - that this 80-something-year-old is still as sharp as a tack. Heck, going from crosswords to crime investigations isn't such a stretch.
The old biddies of Bradley can waste away in blissful stagnation, but Myrtle's not ready to be put out to pasture just yet. The victim, a pretty but pushy town developer, had deep pockets and few friends. Myrtle can't throw one of her gaudy garden gnomes without hitting a potential suspect. Even when another murder takes place, proud Myrtle forges on - armed only with a heavy cane, a venomous tongue, and a widower sidekick.

A pretty good book
I have loved the previous books in the series, so was pleased to see the very first book had made its way to audio. I loved starting at the beginning and finding out how Myrtle and Miles becomes the crime fighting dream team that they are. It is a great start to what has proved to be one of my favourite series, one that is always good for a laugh and is the type of book you can listen to in any order and listen to it again and again. What is even better most of the characters that I love are there right from the start. I also enjoyed the way Red thinks he is pulling the wool over Myrtle by sending her off on a wild goose chase so she doesn't get into trouble, guess how that turned out for him.
Myrtle Clover is board of crosswords they are far to easy, so when she finds a dead body she decides that by solving the murder before the police and more importantly her son the police chief it would prove once and for all that she still has what it takes and doesn't need to move into a retirement home. The problem is with so many people hating the bossy rich woman the Murtle needs a sidekick to watch her back. With her daughter in law fun ragged after a three year old, a French student that doesn't speak English, a Book club that wants to discuss murder instead of books and a husband that didn't get his morning coffee, Myrtle might just have to find help else where and before the killer starts an interest in her.
I like the narrator. The author has used several different narrator's while trying to find the right voice for Myrtle and I am glad she has decided on Judy Blue as she is perfect for the job.
