About this listen
Dean, a young woman that lost her partner in a car accident, takes a job at a hotel during her time of mourning, leaving her old life behind. When a new woman, Kayla, gets hired to assist her in running the hotel, Dean gets defensive, and the two battle it out until the doors of the past are reopened.
In the meantime, Dean is called back to her side job as a private investigator and has to break the secrets behind a drug-hustling prostitution ring without blowing her cover. Dean and Kayla begin to grow close, and as everything plays out, Dean has to decide what is important in her life and if she will ever be able to let another person in without blowing her cover.

Bizarre
I thought the story set off really well and was getting into the story, until you found out Dean and Kayla were both private investigators, that is when the story went downhill for me.
I also felt that the book went to fast in their relationship. They first meet and told to work together at the hotel as joint managers and they don't like each other, that night they sleep together and next morning they answer phone calls to say they have a case, that’s when we find out they are private investigators as a side job, but neither know that the other is at this point in the story.
This is when it turns really dark and is about prostitution and drugs, but to me it didn't mention anything about drugs until the end of the book, but there was a lot of rape which I found upsetting.
Then right at the end of the book there is a twist, but won't say what it is as I don't want to spoil the book for other people.
I felt that the story was very rushed, and felt like the gang raping and stuff, there was no emotion from the characters as everything seemed to carry on fine as she was sleeping with Dean, which I find hard to believe as I believe if a woman has been raped multiple times, she would not want anyone near her man or women until she can come to terms with what’s happened to her, and this is a long process to recover which you can't fully recover from.
I don't believe that knowing Dean for one day, that they would have a strong enough connection/bond/trust for her to want to sleep with her again so fast after being raped.
As for narration, I thought it was good, but the story let it down.

Good frame works, but not explored enough
I’ve really, really tried to enjoy this book. It started off well, the story had so much potential but unfortunately it hasn’t quite delivered. I just couldn’t get to the point where I felt the characters had chemistry and the story never came beneath the surface. I felt like the author tried to cramp way too much story into a relatively short book and time frame, and didn’t instead explore fewer story points deeper. The book felt more like a draft than a finished book - which doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just needs a little more work!
On the plus side, I did enjoy the frame of the story - the right thoughts and frameworks were definitely there but there just wasn’t enough time. For example The two ladies met, hates and suddenly loved each other in the space of a day! It just didn’t feel realistic unfortunately.
Overall though good efforts and with a little more work could really become a little treasure. I did enjoy the writing and will definitely give other books of this author a go.
