Summary

The definitive guide to psychedelics, science and our health by a world-renowned, leading authority, Professor David Nutt.

We are on the cusp of a major revolution in psychiatric medicine and neuroscience. After fifty years of prohibition, criminalisation and fear, science is finally showing us that psychedelics are not dangerous or harmful. Instead, when used according to tested, safe and ethical guidelines, they are our most powerful newest treatment of mental health conditions, from depression, PTSD, and OCD to disordered eating and even addiction and chronic pain.

Professor David Nutt, one of the world's leading Neuropsychopharmacologists, has spent 15 years researching this field and it is his most significant body of work to date. In 2018, he co-founded the first academic psychedelic research centre - underpinned by his mission to provide evidence-based information for people everywhere. It revived interest in the understanding and use of this drug in its many forms, including MDMA, ayahuasca, magic mushrooms, LSD and ketamine. The results of this have been nothing short of ground-breaking for the future categorisation of drugs, but also for what we now know about brain mechanisms and our consciousness.

At a time where there is an enormous amount of noise around the benefits of psychedelics, this book contains the knowledge you need to know about a drug that is about to go mainstream, free from the hot air, direct from the expert.

Fascinating and mind-changing

Wow. What a fascinating round up of the world’s research and findings on psychedelic drugs. The whole book is obviously founded on published scientific research, but what makes it relevant to us lay people is that the findings are always discussed in the context of real human experience. As well as talking about these interesting compounds as medicines, Prof Nutt considers their recreational use, their use in micro doses and their use during ancient rites around the world.

The professor has changed my mind and clarified my thinking on recreational drug use, which is prescient in that I have a pair of inquiring young teenagers who might want to give it a go at some point, and I now feel vastly more equipped to have sensible boundaries and advice for them.

Another thing I love about this audiobook is Professor Nutt’s narration, which in technical/production terms is exemplary (thank God no slimy mouth and tongue noises as I have misophonia). He’s obviously not a performance professional but I loved his reading. He just sounds so incredibly nice, sensible, kindly. I can imagine his patients with trauma or depression or whatever find his, a reassuringly safe pair of hands.

Outstanding

Another outstanding book from this author. The book walks through the medical use of psychedelic pharmaceuticals, the history of unjustified prohibition and the current state of research. In the years to come, some of the material will become out of date. There is a little repetition from his book, “Cannabis, seeing through the smoke”, which is forgivable given the magnitude of the author’s experiences. The narrator is the Author which results in correct pronunciation and he’s a gifted orator. The only contradicting material is Grade 5 evidence (expert opinion), which is substantially less convincing than even the weaker open label studies reported in this.

A must listen

Be taken through the history, and real life effects of psychedelics. Also a look at the future of their use as a medicine in the future.

Fantastic book on all things Science of Psychedelics

The depth of knowledge & experience of Professor Nutt is remarkable & he shares in digestible format. I love that he also narrated the book, it makes it more authentic, like you're sitting in a classroom learning but in conversation. A must-listen to for all Psychedelic enthusiasts, wellbeing & healthcare professionals & drug policy makers.

Great summery

Easy to follow. Extremely relevant. Great reminder of the urgent need to put patient needs at the centre of drug-law reforms.

Informative and honest summary of latest evidence

I really enjoyed this book; the history, the science and the politics. Prof Nutt has made this subject informative and accessible. I will probably buy a hard copy so I can dip in and out of the more complex chapters. The science behind psychedelics’ impact on mental health is fascinating and it would be great if government policy changed, psychedelics were regulated and implemented into health regimes for patient benefit. The potential is so exciting.
