A child of the middle class, and with new independence thrust upon him, Tommo finds himself invited into fading crumbling houses. It's the early nineties and this elite is struggling for relevance. Alienated from the mainstream, and running low on inherited wealth, his peers have retreated into snobbery and fatalism. Half-remembered traditions mix with decadence and an awful lot of small dead animals. And sometimes, not just animals.
Awed by their poise and seduced by their hedonism, Tommo gradually becomes aware of sinister currents beneath the surface and a suppressed rage that threatens to explode into violence.

Scotland the brave
Extremely good narrator. Growing up in Scotland amongst the grouse set. Well worth a listen.

Humorously written page turner
Coming of age tale in a very quirky backdrop, written in the same style as Hugo’s humorous columns. Really enjoyable light read.

Humorous fiction to rival the work of Tom Sharpe
Hugo Rifkind is brilliant on Times radio and as a Times columnist and this novel reveals another dimension. I finished the audiobook in two sessions showing how seductive the story line was . Anyone who has experienced difficulties fitting in with an unfamiliar culture will probably identify with the narrator’s character. The choice of narrator is inspired: a Rifkind sound-alike who seemed to inhabit Tommo perfectly

A little dreary
Too much biography. Took too long to get to the real edgy stuff. Too much wasted time partying and drug taking for sustained interest.

Overwritten
I like Hugo Rifkind on the radio. I even went to a boarding school. This however is over written, with too many self conscious asides which wouldn't have occurred to Tommo. A completely unlikeable and more than slightly unbelievable cast of characters.
