Summary

Everything had a price. Especially the truth.

Former Marine Atlas Kinkaid knows not to ask questions about the clients he protects at the behest of the elite Whitethorn security agency. Just like he doesn't like anyone asking about his scars - scars left by a mysterious attack that haunts his every waking moment.

Consumed by the need to find out what happened to him, Atlas takes a job providing security to Cristian Slava, the indolent - and gorgeous - son of a notorious businessman. Cristian seems to be just another entitled client, but when nights at the club turn into secret meetings and people start going missing, Atlas realizes there's more to Cristian - and to protecting him - than meets the eye.

But the same people who are after Cristian have something Atlas desperately craves: They know exactly what happened the fateful night he was attacked-and are willing to tell him everything....

For a price.

Lovely & Loving Spin on Bodyguard Trope

This was a very well crafted story and such a pleasure!! World Building? Check! Desirable Protagonists? Check! Mystery & Suspense? Check! Relatable Villains? Check! And exceptionally paced with every single chapter being a mini arc that propelled the story forward! I loved that MA Grant expected you to remember dialogue because pay offs came without recaps. The story telling therefore remained brisk while Atlas and Christian's romance had a compelling power play and dynamic. The book ends on a soft cliffhanger but it is satisfying as a standalone.

🎧 John Solo's soft, gentle vocals actually worked very well here. His Atlas was perfect though Christian's timbre and accent took some getting used to. Solo's emotional acting is always outstanding and this was pivotal because, sigh, his accents were atrocious. Which was a damn shame because RV had upper crust English and earthy Romanian characters in addition to the American leads that would have made this such a listening feast if he could have pulled it off. Be that as it may, as l felt all the emotion, sexual tension and suspense, l enjoyed this very much regardless.

Disjointed

I found this audiobook very hard to get into. The story didn't flow well and the writing was excessively flowery in some parts.
Another issue was the narration. The posh voice for Cristian sounded like Stewie Griffin from Family Guy, so I couldn't take it it seriously. The other accents are not the best, and there are some nonsensical accent choices for supposedly Romanian vampires. This meant that the characterizations sounded off.
Even though the story ends on a cliff hanger I'm not invested enough in the characters to continue with the series.
