About this listen

Rule Breaker. Troublemaker. Heart Taker.

Needs him like oxygen.

Dany has so many secrets. He’s not on the island by accident, he’s not a nice guy, and he’s using a fake name. He's laying low, but he must have been born under a bad sign, because the very man he’s hiding from walks back into his life.

A new life in a new town seemed like the right decision for Soren. Discovering Dany living on Piedras brings back all the feelings he's tried to forget.

Too bad Dany is just as compelling as he ever was.

Two men from opposite sides of the law: Can they set aside their differences and trust their hearts?

Real Trouble is set in the Veiled Intentions world. Soren and Dany first appear in the Shielded Hearts series (When It Rains). Real Trouble can be listened to as a stand-alone, is dual-POV following our heroes as they fight their way to their HEA, and is the first in the new West Coast Forensics series.

The Deputy and the Chef heat things up

I was eager to dive into this spin-off series and it did not disappoint with lots going on from Murder to Arson and Kidnapping to boot. Elle Keaton mixes her new characters well with the existing ones from the previous series. Michael Dean does a good job of bringing this collective of residents and visitors to life. Deputy Sorenson and his Dany have an interesting past together...can they leave it behind and find their HEA? Highly recommended MM Contemporary Action-Adventure Romance.

Great start to a new series.

I loved Soren and Dany: I am very partial to second-chance stories, and if you mix that in with a pinch of mystery and action, the result is explosive.
Loved doesn’t-make-things-by-half Soren, he’s persistent and doesn’t stop at anything to get what he wants.
Love Danylo as well: he’s this prickly, closed-off guy with a heart of gold, trying to atone for his family’s sins.
The writing is engaging and the plot interesting, and these two aspects kept me hooked from start to end!

It's good to be back on Piedras Island

After finishing the Hamarsson & Dempsey books I was craving for more. Not just more of scorching hot couples, but also more of the unique characters that populate Piedras,
With Matt and Niall away on a well-deserved vacation, the island is left in the capable hands of Birdy and the newcomer Soren. They have to deal with a new murder case and new cases of arson. Soren wants to find his HEA with a mysterious new resident of the island while proving to his new bosses that he is the right man for the job. It might be complicated when the person he is interested in, just happens to get mixed up in the new mess they are trying to untangle.
While the book can be read as a standalone, I would definitely recommend reading the Veiled intentions series (the events in Real Trouble happen shortly after the end of book 3) to better enjoy the story, and understand the dynamic between the characters (both residents of Piedras and employees of West Coast Forensics).

Real Trouble

A great listen. First in this or connected series and it held as a stand-alone. Now I have more books to check out. The suspense was pretty good. I had it mostly figured out, but I’m good at it, so... Great chemistry and likable characters. I'll be back. Michael Dean did fabulously with the narration.

Perfect

Elle Keaton did a super job with the story, the perfect balance of action/mystery and romance. Dany and Soren were great characters to get to know. Michael Dean did a great job sucking you into the story with the narration.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Loved the ebook, loved the audio even more.

It’s only been a few months since I read the ebook of Real Trouble. Often when I listen to an audiobook so soon after having read the story with my eyes, I don’t pay super close attention while listening because I already know how the story goes. This was not the case with Real Trouble. Michael Dean did a fantastic job with his performance of the audiobook and that kept me focused on the story more than I expected; it was like experiencing it for the first time.

Below is what I wrote when I read the book back in June:

I’ve been a huge fan of Elle Keaton’s writing since I read her Accidental Roots series (now called Shielded Hearts). This new series, West Coast Forensics, is loosely connected to her Veiled Intentions series (formerly called Hamarsson & Dempsey) but you don’t need to have read that series to understand and enjoy this new one. Fans of that series, however, will enjoy visiting with familiar characters.

Real Trouble is a seriously hot story; the chemistry between the two main characters is palpable. I’m not going to take time to rehash the excellent blurb or story. I’ll say that this book kept me engaged way past my normal night-owl bedtime and the only thing that kept me from finishing it then was the lack of toothpicks to prop my eyes open. 😊 Immediately upon waking up I dove right back in and didn’t stop until I finished it.

The story has murder, mystery, fantastic characters, a swear jar and a side character I thought would never be feeding that swear jar. The only problem I have with this book is that that next one can’t come out soon enough even though this one does NOT have a cliffhanger.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

Great mix of romance and crime

This is a wonderful start to a new series. It mixes romance with crime in perfect proportions. Soren and Dany have a complicated history with each other and as individuals so when they meet again, that alone would be enough to build a compelling story around. Keaton, however, adds in murder and other crimes, with plenty of suspects (one too close to home) and handles this aspect of the story deftly. It works perfectly alone and meshes with the romance seamlessly. Michael Dean captures the characters' complexities well and never goes overboard in the suspenseful passages. A very satisfying performance that brings the book to life.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed the chemistry between the two MCs. Interesting story, it's fun to see the same places and people from Keaton's other series reappearing from a new POV. Great action, great love scenes, good balance between the romance and the crime/mystery side of the plot. Loved to see some old favorites showing up again too.

Second Chance for Love

Real Trouble is the first book in the West Coast Forensics series, a contemporary mystery revolving around the sheriff’s department in Piedras. Real Trouble can be read as a standalone, but it is an offshoot from the Shielded Hearts series (previously known as the Accidental Roots series) and the Veiled Intentions series. I believe this book is best read after the Veiled Intentions series. I have only read the Veiled Intention series and my lack of reading the Shielded Hearts series did not affect my enjoyment of this book. I will be reading Shielded Hearts because now I’m addicted to this series’ world.

Soren and Dany have history. History full of passion, blood, and hurt feelings. When they unexpectedly run into each other on the little island of Piedras, all those past feelings come rushing back. The attraction between the two men is undeniable and when they crashed together the heat in the bedroom was sizzling. I really enjoyed the storyline and the entire cast of characters. I like how important secondary characters feel like real people and not just props to propel the story forward. Some of the police work was not entirely accurate, but for a fictional book, I thought it worked very well for the story and was done in a way that I could easily suspend belief and sink into the story. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series and will definitely go back and read the Shielded Hearts series.

The audiobook was narrated by Michael Dean who is a master of his craft. The narration was smooth and the characters were voiced perfectly. I was instantly pulled into the story and really enjoyed it.

A second chance at redemption!

What are the odds Dany and Soren end up in the same town? They have a past, where Dany ran from as Soren hurt. When they meet again, there’s a crime where Dany might be involved. Their chemistry is still there, hotter than ever. There’s suspense and romance, well blended in this story. Great characters and a smart plot make for an interesting listen, with an awesome narrator. Totally recommend it.
