Summary

The No. 2 SUNDAY TIMES Bestseller

An Observer Best Debut of the Year

One of the most hotly anticipated, hilarious and addictive debut novels of the year, from Schitt’s Creek and Workin’ Moms screenwriter and electric new voice in fiction, Monica Heisey.

I feel like when you get a divorce everyone’s wondering how you ruined it all, what made you so unbearable to be with. If your husband dies, at least people feel bad for you.

Maggie’s marriage has ended just 608 days after it started, but she’s fine – she’s doing really good, actually. Sure, she’s alone for the first time in her life, can’t afford her rent and her obscure PhD is going nowhere . . . but at the age of twenty-nine, Maggie is determined to embrace her new status as a Surprisingly Young Divorcée™.

Soon she’s taking up ‘sadness hobbies’ and getting back out there, sex-wise, oversharing in the group chat and drinking with her high-intensity new divorced friend Amy. As Maggie throws herself headlong into the chaos of her first year of divorce, she finds herself questioning everything, including: Why do we still get married? Did I fail before I even got started? How many Night Burgers until I’m happy?

Laugh-out-loud funny, razor sharp and painfully relatable, Really Good, Actually is an irresistible debut novel about the uncertainties of modern love, friendship and happiness from a stunning new voice in fiction, Monica Heisey.

"Hilarious, heart-warming, wise." (Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train)

Fabulous

I inhaled this book in one sitting (it only came out this morning) - I really enjoyed it. so often stories like this while enjoyable can feel a bit paint by numbers, this is well written, entertaining and actually funny. Well rounded characters, witty dialogue and a breakup described without getting entirely romcom about it.

Excellent narration of course, from Julia Whelan brings the whole thing together.

I'm not a Schitts Creek fan, but you can see the hand of a confident writer, and the dialogue is, as you'd expect, snappy and moves the plot along. Definitely a fun well written read.

A first for me - so bad I couldn’t finish it.

I never ever stop halfway reading/listening to a book but this was so awful I couldn’t finish it. Would absolutely not recommend this unless you’re interested in hearing 20 somethings complaining about their divorce in Canada for hours on end.

A peek into a millennial’s psyche

As a study into how a Millennial’s life might work, this was mildly amusing and entertaining. But Bridget Jones it was not. Diverting yes, but sadly forgettable.

Loved it!

This was the perfect cold weather read . A warm, charming, hilariously funny look at devorce . The realisation that friendship and relationship are two entirely different things. We can be messy , life is often messy but even when it is there is laughter to be had.

I just couldn’t carry on any longer

I only got to chapter 9 and I just can’t finish it. The narrator sounds so bored and I just didn’t feel like she pulled me in. The story is also so slow to get going I lost all interest.

Funny and unique

I wasn’t sure about this initially because it’s so unhinged but it’s still very charming and funny and relatable once you get into it

Boring

I tried to stick with it, But this was tedious in the extreme, thought it might get better if I kept listening but my hopes were not fulfilled.

The main character was not very likeable

I couldn’t warm to the MC. I Love Julia Whelan, but not her best performance.
