Summary

My life has been destroyed by two men. One, my hero. The other, my worst nightmare.

I taste the bitterness of betrayal every day as my body bleeds, suffering the touch of my enemy. It’s a fate chosen for me by others and it’s not something I can escape. At least, not yet.

I’m determined to survive, my need for vengeance feeding me. I’ll play this game until every piece is in place so I can break them all.

My plan includes Rylan Wolfe, the FBI agent eager to strike a deal. I give him the information he needs to take down a criminal threat, and he gives me the satisfaction of bringing my enemies to their knees.

But my hunger for justice won’t be sated until they’ve burned to ash. And for my plan to succeed I have no choice but to deceive Rylan — the one man who manages to thaw the ice in my veins.

In the end, I’ll have to decide whether the revenge I’ve dreamt of for so long is worth losing the man who might be able to free my heart.

Great story, great narrators!

I enjoyed Tate and Rylan's story! Their chemistry was great and they were both strong characters. Tate is in a bad situation, but she's determined to rescue herself with or without the help of the FBI. It always helps to have a hot agent watching your back, though.

There were a few times I thought the story could have used a technical review (ex: Tate risks her life when she meets her agent/handler, but it's done on their schedule instead of hers.)

Both narrators did great. Troy Duran might have the deepest voice I've heard in a while.

I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

Narration kept me out of it

If I liked the story well enough, the narration kept me out of it most of the time. A too breathy female voice trying to sound overly sexy and a male narrator with an annoying female voice made the narration quite unpleasant for me.

It started with a firework, with a cute scene between two lovers followed by an intense torture scene. From then on, the story follows Tate and how she’ll get revenge for the death of her boyfriend and all the horrible stuff she went through at the end of her husband and father.

The politics between mafia families and other criminal clans, the various arrangements, the fights for power… The background for the story was quite interesting. Especially to realize that most of the characters are just pawns in the grand scheme.

The romance part of the story was more instalust than anything, and I didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters–certainly not helped by the narration. Too bad, because the building of a new relationship for Tate after everything she experienced–boyfriend’s death, domestic abuse…–could have been an interesting element.

Great Story & Listen🎧 Gripping Romantic Suspense!

Wow, this is an awesome book, the story grabbed my attention right from the start and held it straight to the end. This is the kind of book that once you start you do not want to put down because you need to know what happens next. The characters are complex and well developed, they are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with. Five years earlier Tate’s life was forever changed, now she is stuck in an abusive relationship, a marriage that was forced upon her by the man she loved and looked up to her entire life, her father. What keeps her going is knowing she will have her vengeance against them. She is working with the FBI to take down both her father and her husband, both involved in organized crime. Going to meet her handler she finds out she was assigned a new one, Rylan Wolfe, she was not sure if she should trust him. But the more they got to know each other the more the chemistry between them heated up. I love how everything plays out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, amazing twists and turns, some angst, thrilling suspense, heartfelt and emotional moments and a slow burn romance. S.M West thank you for this great story, I loved every word of it and am looking forward to what comes next in this amazing series.

Lauren Sweet and Troy Duran are talented narrators and voice artists. They did an awesome job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own voice and personality. Lauren Sweet truly grasped Tate’s persona, sounding just as I pictured her to sound, Troy Duran did the same for Rylan, they both performed their character roles with perfection. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Romantic Suspense at it's best!

Romantic suspense is my go to genre, and SM West has moved to the top of my go to listens! Reckless Night in her New York Knights series has it all! Tate is in an abusive, horrible marriage ad has no support from her family. Working with the FBI is the only way she sees out. Rylan is her handler, and now we not only have an alliance, but a slow burning romance full of twists and turns, danger and passion. I was pulled in from the prologue, and just could not get enough of the story. Tate is a strong woman. She may be broken, but she is tough, and willing to do what it takes to put herself back together. Rylan is smart, overly protective and there to do what needs to be done. Their chemistry is strong, their unreachable goal on the verge of attainable. But will they get there? It’s an intriguing listen you don’t want to miss.

Narration by Lauren Sweet and Troy Duran, I was in for a treat. Sweet has a fantastic voice. Her portrayal of Tate has a strength laced with vulnerability, the perfect combination for her. Duran comes through as Rylan with a smooth, protective tone, encompassing our hearts. I enjoyed these two together and loved their performance.

Rylan and Tate

Tate is the daughter of a mobster, Rylan is the FBI handler she is working with. I just have to say that the opening scene of this book was really hard to listen to. Not that the story was bad, because it wasn't, but that someone's own family would treat them so horribly. It really made me sad for Tate. That said, it was the opening scene that made me feel for Tate and kept me in the story later on when she was making terrible decisions and being reckless.
This was a pretty good start to a new series and introduced a lot of characters that have really good potential for their own story. S.M West does a great job of making people both flawed and likable. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the stories unfold and hope for a final resolution that includes closure on the relationship between Tate and her mother.
I would have like a little more detail on the mother and find out what she is all about in this book.
Narration was good. I liked both Lauren Sweet and Troy Duran. I've not heard many books that either have narrated.
Overall, I liked the story and feel it was worth my time to listen. I would not say I loved but I would not hesitate to recommend to someone that likes a story with a bit of suspense.

Romantic Suspense

Reckless Night by S.M. West is a romantic suspense that I listened to on audio narrated by Lauren Sweet and Troy Duran. The book was previously published as Red in the Love in Color series.

This book does come with a Warning: “This book contains graphic language, explicit sexual scenes and violence.”

This is the second book of Suzanne’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I loved the chemistry between Rylan and Tate. The book does end on a cliffhanger but that wasn’t a surprise since it’s the first book in the New York Knights series. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series Fallen Night.

Lauren and Troy did an amazing job on the narration. They both know how to bring a story to life.

I would recommend this book if you love romantic suspense or forbidden romances.
