Summary

From the moment she’s struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours, and the heartbreak of forbidden love.

Luckily Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly, intelligent Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who is also fossil-obsessed. Despite their differences in age and background, Mary and Elizabeth discover that, in struggling for recognition, friendship is their strongest weapon.

I loved this book

I loved this book, although I found the whole experience of women it that society at that time very sad. The hugely interesting juxtaposition of era specific female restrictions and the very new discoveries of fossils that challenged the preconceptions of the history of the world combined with sympathetic characters make this a lovely read.

A delight!

A delight from start to finish. Beautifully written and read. A book based on real people and happenings in the world of the first fossil hunters. Illuminating and entertaining.

I loved it.

Wonderful book - completely absorbing with a great performance by Hattie Morahan whose voice is perfect for this narrative and these characters. Tracy Chevalier has taken a real, inspirational figure and written a fictional novel about her. Fascinating story - would absolutely recommend.

BRILLIANT BOOK

THIS book is a great read. well narrated & well written. Everything about it is great except I thought that there was something else going to happen, I don't know what but something, I felt was missing, or maybe it was a bit flat, just a touch.
I am not going to say when,
but I liked it when they became equal. Would definitely recommend this book not just
to people who like fossils, there
are quite a few different
subjects throughout this book.

A wonderfully written true life story of an interesting historical figure

The description doesn’t do justice to the book. Yes, there is something about the lighting and about love, but the story is much deeper than this. And it is worth mentioning that this is a story about a real historical figure, one of the first female scientists in England.

Writing women’s achievements back into host

Well written, well edited, this book is a lyrical but not romanticised story. The performance transcended the voice, which was easy to listen to and told tales of small disappointments as well as triumphs in an effective, understated way. One to get lost in.

Such a brilliant, beautiful written book

I absolutely loved Remarkable Creatures. It not only captured the world of the early nineteenth century so convincingly, but also brought two wonderful characters to life, fully realised, admirable and easy to love. The performance by Hattie Morahan was also excellent, five stars all round!
