Summary

You cannot bounce back from hardship. You can only move through it. There is a path through pain to wisdom, through suffering to strength, and through fear to courage if we have the virtue of resilience.

In 2012, Eric Greitens unexpectedly heard from a former SEAL comrade, a brother-in-arms he hadn’t seen in a decade. Zach Walker had been one of the toughest of the tough. But ever since he returned home from war to his young family in a small logging town, he’d been struggling. Without a sense of purpose, plagued by PTSD, and masking his pain with heavy drinking, he needed help. Zach and Eric started writing and talking nearly every day, as Eric set down his thoughts on what it takes to build resilience in our lives.

Eric s letters drawing on both his own experience and wisdom from ancient and modern thinkers are now gathered and edited into this timeless guidebook. Resilience explains how we can build purpose, confront pain, practice compassion, develop a vocation, find a mentor, create happiness, and much more. Eric s lessons are deep yet practical, and his advice leads to clear solutions.

We all face pain, difficulty, and doubt. But we also have the tools to take control of our lives. Resilience is an inspiring meditation for the warrior in each of us.

Really good.

Good narration. Great content. The music between chapters is not my taste.

But this series of letters is class. I wish I had someone looking out for me like this. However, there is plenty to learn from, re-listen, and put into practice.

Great work Eric. I hope 'Walker' has some weight lifted from his shoulders and walks lighter.

Life is supposed to be challenging.

I liked the narrator's voice.

Virtually nothing is said about war. It is all about surviving in real life.

Real life is a big challenge and we need these resilience lessons if we are to do well.

It focuses a lot on letters trying to encourage and help with the mental recovery of a veteran after war and alcoholism.

They are lessons that we can all benefit from.

Life is a challenge. We need to know that in advance and learn resilience.

Nice thoughts and ideas

I enjoyed this book for the thinking it stimulated. COVID-19 has been tough on us all, and being a nurse has been no exception. This book mentioned some interesting concepts which helped get me through the toughest period of my career. I won’t deny that Eric’s talking melody at times got a bit irritating and sometimes the tone was a bit “I know everything”, but ultimately I recommend it to anyone having a difficult time and who is looking for a way through. I don’t agree with Eric’s politics, but I do think he had some really valuable points and I am grateful that he shared it in this book.

Particularly I liked how Eric mentioned mental health is an ongoing process. You don’t just take a really good shower one day and never have to shower again. Good mental hygiene is a process and we have to continuously look after our minds.

Great book for tough times

I go through a very tough time and have been fighting with a long-lasting illness of my Mum for years. This is the first book that addresses all the fears and worries related to hardship and provides directions on how to go through different periods in our lives with courage and dignity. It has helped me a lot and I will certainly be coming back to it.
