About this listen
Tom Ripley detested murder. Unless it was absolutely necessary. If possible, he preferred someone else to do the dirty work. In this case someone with no criminal record, who would commit 'two simple murders' for a very generous fee....

Brilliant!
The story is brilliant. I just couldn't stop listening, and the performance is great as well. Every character is spoken differently, and it works perfectly. Loved it, got book three straight away!

Another winner from Highsmith.
This is the third in the series that I have listened to now, and once again I cannot fault it - a book in which the tension builds gradually, but by the end it had me completely gripped. Excellent narrator as well.

Far fetched but okay
The Ripley series gets more far fetched as it goes along and this one was ridiculous. There is also no real explanation as to how he gets out of the equally ridiculous spot he found himself in at the end of the second book. That said, I really like Highsmith’s writing and the characters and I enjoyed it for that. The narrator was also good.

awful performance
What disappointed you about Ripley's Game?
Anyone who knows Highsmith's particular style - her gradual build-up of suspense and tension - would be looking forward to another appearance of Tom Ripley. Unfortunately I did not get past the first hour of this audiobook: the reader put me off. He is unable to lend a credible voice to female characters and manages to produce a peculiarly dull version of what should be an intriguing beginning. The book starts off in France so this would have required a reader who can at least pronounce a few French words, but there are an astonishing number of howlers and mispronounciations here. I'm afraid I lost patience and switched to the conventional book. A really poor performance.
What will your next listen be?
The Goldfinch, by Donna Tart.
Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Brooke’s performances?
Not if I can help it.
What character would you cut from Ripley's Game?
The reader.
Any additional comments?
Poor performance spoils the story.

Highsmith’s writing is so pedestrian
Why doesn’t she just get on with the story? … Wasting so much time on inconsequential mundane detail and conversation.
