Summary

Secret societies, serial killers, and a seriously snarky PI.

When Ginger Mitchell finds out her mother committed suicide, she packs up her life as a Vegas "dancer" (hey, somebody's gotta do it) and drives her cherry-red SUV straight home to Portland. Without a disapproving mom to rebel against, what was the point?

When she arrives back in her hometown, she finds a lot more going on than fancy food trucks and put-a-bird-on-it hipsters.

Murders are being passed off as suicides. College-aged women keep going missing. And then there's the troubling spate of mobsters who keep inviting her out to eat.

With a pile of cash saved from her last job and no one around to tell her not to, Ginger decides to become a private investigator, to find out exactly what's gone wrong in the City of Roses. First up: Her mother's "suicide."

Includes the first six novellas in the Roseland series, Home Is Where the Start Is, The Ruth Is Out There, The Body in the Pool, Amber Alert, Jane Dead, Welcome to Roseland.

Fabulous!

Best thing I’ve listened to in ages. It would make a great tv series. I’ve just watched Veronica Mars and felt a bit bereft but this has made up for it. The main characters are funny and likeable. Narration superb. By the way I am 77

Excellent!

A great listen! Would definitely recommend to listeners of crime/mystery.
Ginger is definitely a likeable protagonist with her rather relaxed attitude to her cases. It’s certainly been a wild couple of weeks, beginning with leaving her ‘old life’ to overnight after the news of her mothers death, her private detective cases jump from collage high jinks to top tier criminal organisations in the blink of an eye!
Rhino also the perfect side kick, and also doesn’t seem at all phased by Gingers demands and madness!
I also think the supernatural element adds an extra dimension to the story.
Narration is excellent, with all the characters clearly recognisable by voice. I do see how the he said/she said might be annoying to some listeners, but it didn’t really bother me too much.
The story was pacy and kept momentum throughout, I will definitely be downloading the next in the series!
5 stars all round!

Brilliant 🤩

An excellent book. Loved the story lines, loved the characters, they are well drawn and believable. Good banter and lovely humour.

The performance was first class and so well written that it seemed to fly by. Even the apparition made sense somehow.

Absolutely the best!

I started this as not really expecting much, as it was a freebie. At first I wsas mildly irritated by the screechy narrator and tha odd plot line with ghosts and lucky chance meetings with useful characters. So far, so much as expected. But I kept going as there was a sassy humour and freewheeling style that engaged me. WELL!!! Once the story hit its stride and the body count mounted and the dirty cops popped up, i was hooked. Suddenly, the narrator was spot on, she has great range and gets the gruff as well as the sass. Interaction between the leads is laugh-out-loud, and the whole, however unbelievable, is race-along , top speed action. Absolutely the best book in the past year and, if you like your Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane, a complete no-brainer.

Kept me hooked

Really enjoyed this book, the narrator was perfect and it was really great how Gingers personality came across. There were lots of stories or cases intertwining throughout and none dragged on which was great. Really liked the characters and the fantasy side of it (no spoilers) made any horrible bits easier to read.
Can’t wait to read the next one.
