About this listen

Rosemary Woodhouse and her struggling-actor husband, Guy, move into the Bramford, an old New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and only elderly residents.

Neighbours Roman and Minnie Castavet soon come nosing around to welcome them; despite Rosemary's reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises that she keeps hearing, her husband starts spending time with them.

Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Rosemary becomes pregnant, and the Castavets start taking a special interest in her welfare. As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castavets' circle is not what it seems.

Great Story, Mediocre Narration

Rosemary sounds pathetic and stupid, which she isn’t!
Her lines are read in a very high pitched, breathy tone which I found irritating.

Great listen!

Wonderfully narrated by Katherine Fenton, the book is much better than the movie. There’s atmosphere and real characters, both adding to a good experience.

A classic that still stands up today

Excellent narration, the characters really come to life.

I found the book to be fast paced and exciting, as well as scary in many parts.

I've seen the movie and still really enjoyed the audiobook.

Totally recommended!

Good Halloween listen.

Quite predictable, but I enjoyed it. The ending was really dragged. Enjoyed the descriptions though.

A proper horror story!

I may have read this as a teenager, but I have definitely seen the movie several times, and so decided to listen to the audiobook. This book is a proper classic horror story. There are no gory, gruesome bits, but it is very, very creepy and listening gave me goosebumps and and a feeling of impending doom. The setting of the illustrious Bramford apartment block is brilliant (though I do NOT want to live there!) and Ira Levin describes it perfectly. Although the book was written in 1967 I wouldn't say the plot is dated though the language has, and there are a couple of instances of racism. Even if you have seen the movie (which does follow the book quite closely) then I would still recommend that you read the book too.

I enjoyed the narration by Katherine Fenton.
