Summary
The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.
The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

Why?
Listened to all the books in this series so far (except for only in death and blood pact as they’re not available) and got used to the way the pervious books were read, James McPherson doesn’t do a bad job, but it’s far too different from what I was used to, and it really ruined my enjoyment of the book, and the fact he made Larkin sound like some so ratty little crack head really left a bad taste in my mouth for such a great character, that and gaunt sounded like he was 16 years old, not a grizzled veteran commander. Great story but made worse from the decision to change the regular narrator

Solid story, sloppy narration.
Such a great story. But such a massive let down by the narrator. The voice acting is confused and sloppy, with many characters being indistinguishable, and often accents forgotten.
A major disappointment, especially after hearing Toby Longworth breathe such life into the ghosts with previous novels.

why would you change the narrator after so many books...
like most others, i love the series but this book is just ruind by the narrator. and I don't blame him for that, I blame the ones deciding who's reading what book. all the voices are wrong, not even a bit close to Toby's. I'm not sure why this decision was made but it really ruined the book. honestly, making male warrior characters sound like an old witch from a Disney movie.... cmon! someone should be put up on charges for this!

Excellent reading
So much emotion from McPherson in each line of dialogue. Loves listening to this on my commutes. Read Salvation's Reach a few years back and wanted a refresher on it before I listen to the next book on the series

better narration required
Not a fan of this narrator but the story is excellent. Irritating new pronunciations of some of the prominent characters

Not my favourite story of the series
Because of the way that they are being released on Audible, there has been a gap of several stories between this one and the last one that I listened to. This makes for a very disjointed story as several developments have been skipped over.
This story is well written, but again costs some likeable Ghosts as casualties, which is a little demoralising.
I think that this a well red, though he lacks the versatility of accents that Toby Longworth normally brings. Unfortunately, as Toby has narrated the whole series so far, this change is VERY jarring and makes an honest assessment of the performance difficult.

What the feth has he done to Larkin’s voice?!
I was apprehensive when I saw the narrator had changed for this issue in the series, but gave it a chance.
Started off okay, clearly a talented narrator and showed a good array of Tanith/Scottish accents. But by the emperor, he absolutely butchered Larkin (as another reviewer has noted).
Really broke the immersion for me and I couldn’t power through, had to leave it unfinished. You’d think if you were picking up a series from another narrator that had done the previous dozen books, you’d do a bit more homework, especially on the fan favourite characters…

Great story, terrible narration
Not the narrators fault. An error to change the narrator late in the series. Gaunts ghotsts are my favourite novel series I will defend it to anyone. But the way the characters were portrayed was so jarring to me that I found myself desperately waiting for it to be over. Gaunt Larkin and Zweil especially they sounded cartoonish. A sad thing to have a first low point while reading these books. The story was good. Perhaps a little slow at the start to build tension. There were certain strange moments that seemed as if Dan Abnet had got someone else to write certain parts. It felt more light hearted and whimsical than his usual writing style. But that could also be down to the narration.

brilliant grunts ghost novel
okay very used to Toby longworth doing the audio for the grunts novels, not sure why he wasn't doing this. - however I thought the narration was good. sorry very good not the best gaunts story but the depth of charterers and the plot is still gripping as ever. always worth the credits..

Shame about the voice
It's very hard to listen to when you've started from book 1 to book 12 nobody sounds the same and all the characters you've gotten to know sounds wrong
