Summary

More heart-stopping action and suspense from the best-selling author of Amazonia and Subterranean....

In his five previous thrillers, James Rollins, the king of speculative adventure writing, has taken listeners on mind-expanding journeys spanning from the top of the world to deep within the Earth’s surface. In this latest voyage of imagination combining hard science with explosive excitement — his most breathtaking yet — he explores the mysterious sands of the Arabian peninsula.

Twenty years ago, a wealthy British financier disappeared near Ubar, the fabled lost city buried beneath the sands of Oman. Now, an expedition of scientists, led by the financier’s daughter, is finally setting off for the legendary metropolis to unlock the desert’s secrets. What they find, however, is more beautiful than they ever dreamed — and far deadlier. Within Ubar is a powerful energy source that could fuel the entire earth above — if it can be harnessed. But before they can resurface, the explorers become trapped. For the same life-giving force that can save the world is about to set off a giant, sweeping storm awesome enough to annihilate everything in its wake....

Please don’t waste your time

I really don’t know how I got to the end of this. At least once in each listening session I was rolling my eyes and praying for it to be over.
Where to start? The premise for the story could have made for an entertaining story, if a bit boy’s own and contrived. The execution, however is appalling. The prose is stilted and the characters are cardboard cut-outs who you never care about. And the dialogue? The dialogue is so clunky I found myself laughing out load. Primary school children would write more convincing dialogue.
When it comes to the performance I think John Meagher must have been paid by the word. He reads so fast that it hurt my head to listen. Was he on speed, like one of the characters? I ended up changing the playback speed to 0.8 just to make it tolerable.
As you can probably guess, I shan’t be listening to any more in this series, or by James Rollins if this is typical of his output.

Good storyline - made me want to get to the end

Disliked the narrating! I don’t know why the narrator thinks an English woman sounds like a weak and feeble old lady! Nearly ruined the book for me - if the story had not been so gripping - I would have given up just because of the awful accents of the narrator!

Great story

I love the mix of fact and fiction. The narrator was not the best but at least his voice is not irritating, he just needs more practice to distinguish between characters.

Good read, shame about the narration

This one really need a British narrator, there’s a lot of English people talking and lots of ‘colloquialisms’ and they aren’t well read, in my opinion. Also we say ‘anti-terrorism’ … not ‘aunty terrrorism’.

A fun action adventure

The way the author draws all the different characters all together and weaves them through these action packed scenes is very well done. It never feels like it’s dragging and is definitely worth a listen if you love action adventure novels.

Couldn't out it down

Cracking story and clever storyline. Very enjoyable, well researched and sympathetic characters, I will buy more of the series.
