Summary

A Warhammer Age of Sigmar Novel

The Varanguard are the elite warriors of the Everchosen, those worthy of fighting by Archaon's side. When treachery strikes, Vanik, one such warrior, will stop at nothing to bring Archaon's vengeance to his foes.

Listen to it because

It's a look inside the inner circle of Archaon Everchosen and his forces—a fascinating glimpse at the greatest champions of Chaos in the Mortal Realms.

The story

Archaon, the Everchosen, is the most powerful and feared of all the great Champions of the Dark Gods. Warlords of immense cruelty, who have waged innumerable campaigns of suffering and slaughter, thirst to fight by his side. Such Knights of Ruin are known as the Varanguard.

Though Vanik the Black Pilgrim’s blade drips with the blood of conquered empires, he is yet to prove himself worthy of ascension into the Fifth Circle of the Varanguard. At last, he faces his final quest: to hunt down and slay a legendary hero of Order that prophecies foretell will liberate the Mortal Realms from the stranglehold of Chaos. Yet when a betrayal strikes the very heart of the Varanspire, the great fortress of the Everchosen himself, it soon becomes clear to Vanik that Sigmar’s Chosen is not the only threat to Archaon’s reign that he must defeat. For Vanik, there will be only victory or oblivion. For he is a Varanguard, and no enemy of the Three Eyed King will escape his blade, lest the Varanspire fall.

Skull-Shatteringly Superb

While the path to become a chaos warlord is already well covered in novels and can seem predictable or a very linear story, Scourge of Fate builds on the established lore and stands out as one of the very best tales from AOS to date. Showing how a simple man can be pushed onto an evil path through his own sense of betrayal and the environment he finds himself thrust into, rather than the age old tropes such as "Desire to rule and dominate" for the sake of it, this tale shows how even noble ideals like protecting your family can be twisted by the Dark Gods, This is what the Black Library is all about.

A must listen for Slaves To Darkness Fans

Honestly probably the best AOS audiobook I've listened to. The story and performance couldn't be improved upon. A fascinating insight into the internal politics and lives of the chaos factions.

Good story

My first dip into AoS books and not disappointed! Great story with an anti-hero that you really root for. Perfect to listen to as I was painting Chaos warriors

An anti hero

The story of an anti hero. The author does a very good job of making an evil character likeable and by the end you forget exactly how evil
