About this listen
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Secrets for the Mad by dodie, read by dodie, Joshua Edwards, Hazel Hayes, Jack Howard, Daniel J. Layton, Sammy Paul, Benjamin Redwood and Rebecca Fortuin.
Find hope in dark times
When I feel like I'm going mad, I write.
A lot of my worst fears have come true - fears that felt so big I could barely hold them in my head. I was convinced that when they happened, the world would end.
But the world didn't end. In fact, it pushed on and demanded to keep spinning through all sorts of mayhem, and I got through it. And because I persisted, I learned lessons about how to be a stronger, kinder, better human - lessons you can learn only by going through these sorts of things.
This is for the people with minds that just don't stop; for those who feel everything a thousand times more than others around them.
Here are some words I wrote.
Features versions of dodie's songs recorded exclusively for the audiobook and includes a live version of 'She' from her 2017 UK tour.

A wonderful listen
dodie has made me cry several times. The first of these times was when I initially stumbled across her hauntingly beautiful vocals in the song and video for Intertwined which struck a chord with me during the painful breakup I was enduring at the time. I've been an avid dodie fan ever since.
There are some genuinely tear inducing moments in this audiobook when dodie recounts past traumas and articulates her feelings for her family and for her ever supportive circle of friends, some of whom make guest appearances in the audiobook.
As a 46 year old man I'm not really the target audience for several chapters of this book (basically dodie's guide to being a young person) but the worldly wisdom she imparts to her younger fans is sound and frankly I have so much goodwill for this author that I could happily listen to her read the phone book.
Fleshed out nicely with some adorable acoustic renditions of her songs between the chapters, this makes for an essential listen for any dodie fan.

Relaxing yet refreshing
Dodie has always been a favourite public figure of mine, her voice, he stories and most of all, her adorable nature were why I bought this book. I finished it in one sitting.
With songs performed by Dodie, to recipes for awesome meals, this book displays dissociative and mental health disorders in a way that I think everybody needs to hear.

A rare treat to devour.
Take 1 wonderful, thoughtful, rather messy, bit mad and very talented writer.
Add 8 fresh, well seasoned narrators.
Pour in a pint and a half of honesty, a few glasses of your preferred poison, and lots of water.
Add several large laughs.
Slowly stream in 2-3 facefulls of tears.
Add a poached egg for no real reason.
Top with a generous amount of cheese, grated, oh go on, more than that!
Portion into 57 glorious chapters, interlaced with a handful of your favourite songs.
Stew over a medium warm feeling of listening to a great friend that you've never even met, for 4 hours and 36 minutes, until you're just about melting at the edges.
Best served with tea. A proper good mug of tea.
Give it a like, if you liked it, if you like. :P
Enjoy.

Ideal for Teens
I liked the book and the content. I like the way how Dodie mixed her story telling with practical hints and advice. However, as an older person it feels like something that I should have listened to and likely to have benefited from as an adolescent or teenager.

stunning and unique
What a clever use of the medium! combining stories and songs and with input from friends, this is a gorgeous bit of art.
I was not familiar with dodie before I bought this - and to be honest, some of the book was a but young for me (I need a middle-aged dodie giving me advice on feeding my family when one kid is suddenly vegan and the other only eats white food) - but I loved it anyways.
I have kids just coming into adolescence in a world completely changed by social media and the interwebs. and I like to think I am pretty "with it", but also I'm 39 and my days of gigs and late nights and dating are (thankfully) behind me. This collection of stories and advice and songs was like a bridge between their world and mine. a reminder that while many things have changed, a lot of things are the same.
Plus the songs were lovely.
