Summary

A book for clinicians and clients to use together that explains key concepts of body psychotherapy.

Written for therapists and clients to explore together in therapy, this book is a practical guide to the language of the body. It begins with a section that orients therapists and clients to the volume and how to use it, followed by an overview of the role of the brain and the use of mindfulness. The last three sections are organized according to a phase approach to therapy, focusing first on developing personal resources, particularly somatic ones; second on utilizing a bottom-up, somatic approach to memory; and third on exploring the impact of attachment on procedural learning, emotional biases, and cognitive distortions.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

In depth, practical, innovative and enlightening

I have always had my reservations about CBT top down processing to treat trauma as well as severe anxiety and this gives me great tools to try experiments with my clients as a therapist. I have to buy the book now though to get access to the worksheets. Thank you to the authors for an important contribution to trauma informed treatment / self help.

Don't waste money on Audible

This is supposed to be a workbook. You can't use the worksheets with clients because the developer has disabled printing. This makes the book completely useless as a workbook. Good information buy the printed version.

Narration drains all meaning from the words

This narrator convincingly mimics an automated voice -there is no variation in speed, tone, inflection or any of the other factors we depend on to make sense of language. He bombards the listener with an undifferentiated stream of rapid monotonous sounds, scarcely pausing to separate sentences. It is ironic that a book about the importance of interpreting bodily states has been given such a shockingly bad narration which undermines the value of the words. This book needs to be re-recorded urgently, preferably with an English accent and narrator who has significantly greater awareness of tonal variation. I am shocked that this important work has been ruined by such poor and insensitive production. I doubt I will be able to finish it. At present it's main function is as an aid to sleep...
