Summary

Detective Ford has a cold-blooded killer to catch. But can he escape his own dark secrets?

Barely a month since his promotion to Inspector, DI Ford is called in to investigate the murder of a young nurse and her son in a small flat in Salisbury. There are few clues, and no apparent motive, but Ford can sense that there's a serial killer at work. After all, he knows from brutal personal experience how killers cover their tracks....

It's been six years since Ford lost his wife in a climbing accident - an accident he caused. He is desperate to keep the truth hidden, especially from his son, Sam. But Ford's new partner, Dr. Hannah Fellowes, is a crime scene investigator with a ruthlessly analytical mind, and as they work together to track down the killer, his crippling guilt is compounded by fear of exposure.

When instinct leads him towards a high-profile suspect, his superiors' warnings just make him more determined to connect impulse and fact. But can Ford hold it all together - the case, his life - long enough to stop the killer?

Enjoyable Read!

My first Andy Maslen, but it won’t be my last. It took me a while to get used to the narration but an enjoyable story with good characters, just coming into their own. I am looking forward to learning more about them as the series unfolds….

couldn't put it down

Normally I get really into books then can't finish them as they get boring...this one was the opposite...couldn't leave it alone in the second half...a very easy enjoyable read (listen). It would have been nice to have some proper south west accents from the narrator but otherwise I loved it.

Thoroughly enjoyable

A well written and researched police thriller. Definitely a cut above most of them. Some of the voices and accents were a bit over the top but it didn't distract from the cleverness of the narrative.

Enjoyable

A gruesome murder of a nurse and her young son is investigated by newly promoted DI Ford. As more murders take place he realises there is a serial killer at work. With two main suspects can Ford identify the perpetrator before the case is taken from him? A tense murder mystery with gruesome scenes and extraordinary motives.

Compulsive

I read/listened to this over two days and it ruined my plans for a Sunday afternoon - since I could not put it down.
Andy Maslen in good form with a new ( at least to me) series, which is basically a police procedural set in the South of England over a three week period. Good characters and plenty of twists.
Stella Cole fans will not be disappointed. Perhaps not a totally original serial killer plot but with plenty to get involved in.
I will definitely be reading the next episode soon; this is not one of those tales with so many loose ends that you are almost obliged to read the next one - though I think you will want to!
Narration of the audiobook is excellent.

I'm not normally one for reviews but...

I have read and/or listened to previous books by Andy and whilst they've always been enjoyable, this one had me gripped.

Twists and turns, this way and that, the pace is fast enough to want to keep going but slow enough to allow you to understand the characters.

The characters have good depth and background, and I can't wait to read the next instalment

A fast paced thriller

A clever story with overlapping suspects. Very tense with a detective tackling his first case as Inspector and determined not to fail. He is a single parent who is in danger of alienating his teenage son because of his long hours at work. Tense right up to the end. It is a great read.

Not a fan

Difficult to enjoy a book when the 'hero' is an unpleasant egotist, given to shouting at and bullying people and trusting his gut rather than putting any effort into evidence gathering. I like this author's Stella Cole books but I found DI Ford so irritating that I actually wanted the killer to get away with it, and perhaps kill DI Ford as well. Our hero allegedly feels guilty for causing his wife's death - which he did, also because of bullying - but not guilty enough to change his behaviour one iota.
