Summary
Sometimes in-laws are worse than outlaws.
Retired from teaching, rookie investigator Deena Sharpe wants justice for the wrongly accused. She also wants to impress her new boss. But when she trips over a dead body in the church’s haunted house, the police try to pin it on one of their clients. Can Deena defend a person she thinks may be guilty?
To make matters worse, Deena’s mother-in-law has moved in and has plans of her own. She’s determined to teach her son’s wife how to properly cook and clean. But a clash with a nosy neighbor over the family’s dog sends everyone into a tailspin.
Now, Deena must risk her reputation to sort through the secrets and lies of small town politics. However, when clues point to the pastor, his wife, and his secretary, she is stuck in the middle of an unholy murder case.
Lisa B. Thomas’ Sharpe Point is the fourth book in the Maycroft Mystery series, a clean whodunit with plenty of snarky humor and a touch of romance. Buy it today to join in the fun.

What a waste of a perfectly good cake.
Halloween, definitely not Deena's favourite time, and the slightly early Carnival finds Deena, home made cake in hand (her mother-in-law has been teaching her baking during her prolonged stay), tripping over something in the dark. Or rather, someone; yes, Deena has literally stumbled on another dead body. So much for her promises to herself not to get involved again.
This, the fifth in the cozy stand alone mystery series set in Maycroft, Texas, again follows Deena as she juggles home life and friendships with her compulsion to get involved with investigating what really happened - as she sees it. In Agatha Christie fashion, clues are scattered along the way for the reader to try to work it out first. Well written, and with good dialogue and character interaction, these stories just keep getting better.
With the excellent Kelley Hazen again narrating with warm gusto and great character voicings, this is a fun addition to the series. Recommended.

A murder mystery has never been so funny!
Be prepared for a ride. This is a murder mystery, of that there is no doubt. But the plot is also quirky and hilarious with all the idiosyncrasies of small town politics. It is, quite literally, a murder with lots of suspicious characters and a dollop of icing. Dina has her hands full between her boss, her mother-in-law, her pregnant friend, a maybe stalker, the police and, of course, the murder. Nothing is ever quite what it seems, most especially the outcome of Dina's investigation. But what do you do when the victim himself is worse than any of the suspects?
