Summary

Enlisting was his only ticket out.

Raised fatherless in a galactic Brinktown, Joe Pikeman only ever wanted to escape.

The Galactic Guard offered that escape, with the promise of regular meals to boot. Now Joe is a full Guardsman, with his own ship and a snide partner bot who hates humans almost as much as he hates other bots.

To the pirates he hunts, Joe is known as the Butcher. His bloody reputation has landed him in the center of a sweeping conspiracy that threatens to stamp out the galaxy’s last surviving human settlements.

As Joe races against time to salvage what’s left of his species, one thing becomes crystal clear: You can never escape your past.

It all starts on Earth, humanity’s deserted homeworld....

It's Fine with a capital F

I didn't hate this, the story was coherent however the writing had a lot of holes. Not plot holes, but holes in what people do and say to each other.

It get very grating that there are many many scenes where people tell the protagonist what he is but these contradict the actions he takes. It's like being shown one thing but told another. It's jarring and is indicative of sub par story telling.

The main characters spends so much time being told variations of him being useless and a terrible person despite every encounter we see having him doing things that are brilliant and trying to help everyone. If the writer wanted to write the checkered past hero they needed to spend some chapters actually showing him being terrible, to actually set up a redemption.

All that said its a fun concept but not worth anything more than your free credit if you have one spare and time to kill.

Some audio kinks and logic issues but good story

It sounds like some parts got a second recording that sounds very different from the original. Also there are some logic issues in the main characters behaviour towards the end of the story. But overall still a good book to listen to and to think about what if humans will walk that way.

interesting take on the space opera

love the concept of a digital and meatspace parallel existence.
epic sword battles in a game world and the real
good cop going against the prevailing narrative. just because everyone is telling you something is real doesn't mean it is. he questions everything which leads him down a rabbit hole.
elements of the matrix, star wars and even Jurassic park.

A perfect Sci Fi story from a great author!

A great listen! I was looking forward to driving to and from work just to listen to this book. Scott Bartlett books are always great, and awesome narration from Mark Boyett.
A great story line, which concentrates of the story without getting jammed up with technical explanation of how the galaxy works.
A gripping plot with a main character that is well developed. Looking forward to more in this series

Worth Reading

It took a little time for me to get into the story. I persevered and as I continued to listen I began to enjoy the books. The characters, especially Pikeman the main character, become more developed as the story grows. Pikeman develops not as the perfect hero but as a man who makes mistakes along the way but tries his very best which is more than good enough. He cares about the victims of his actions but they don’t deter him from what he has to do.
The books are full of action as you would expect. The concept of people living in the subverse is interesting and it isn’t taken for granted that everything in the subverse is hunk dory. I recommend that if like me you find it a bit pedestrian at the beginning, keep going on as it is worth it. It’s just like life, quiet moments followed by excitement.

Different

It took a few chapters before I could really get into the dystopian environment of a virtual society, but once I warmed to it I really enjoyed this series. There was more than enough action and there was even some serious humor to be had.

Well worth the time to listen.
