Summary

It’s the autumn of 1890, and a spate of bombings has hit London. The newspapers are full of fevered speculation about anarchists, antimonarchists and Fenians. But one man suspects an even more sinister hand behind the violence.

Sherlock Holmes believes Professor Moriarty is orchestrating a nationwide campaign of terror, but to what end? At the same time, a bizarrely garbed figure has been spotted on the rooftops and in the grimy back alleys of the capital.

He moves with the extraordinary agility of a latter-day Spring-heeled Jack. He possesses weaponry and armor of unprecedented sophistication. He is known only by the name Baron Cauchemar, and he appears to be a scourge of crime and villainy. But is this masked man truly the force for good that he seems? Is he connected somehow to the bombings?

Holmes and his faithful companion Dr. Watson are about to embark on one of their strangest and most exhilarating adventures yet.

I liked it.

Very much in the spirit of the originals just marred for me by the narrator’s voice of Sherlock Homes. It was a bit too monotone and there were some decidedly odd pronunciations of words! Overall though, I would listen to another.

Very good book

The story mixes genres, making it a unique experience.
These genres bring more excitement and intrigue into the book.
On the other hand, there is a gap in the clues, implying coincidence, or at least not clearly explained.
On the whole, an excellent read, well performed.

Absolute madness! Quite fun as such

Not one for the hardcore Holmes fan, but if you like all the cliched Holmes-isms (Holmes amazing someone by knowing everything about them, based on ludicrous deductive leaps) and aren’t averse to the introduction of some kind of crazy Steampunk Batman-esque vigilante character, a bad guy with the Frenchisms of the knights in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, who also happens to end up enlisting a Victorian-era Transformer to his cause, a Baritsu vs Savate UFC-style dust-up and all kinds of other anachronistic madness, you will find this your dream novel

Enjoyable plot with occasionally dodgy narration

As with all of the James Lovegrove Sherlock Holmes books I have listened to this story is enjoyable and plausible in the genre.

Yet again the narration is irritating. It’s mostly really good but occasionally a word, phrase or place name is completely mispronounced eg “toying and froying” Instead of toing and froing or GrantHam instead of Grantham.

Best one so far

I love all James Lovegrove’s books but this is the best of the bunch I think. Gripping from start to finish.

Klienman's narration

These series of books in the Holmes and Watson style are exceptional. The atmosphere, language and conundrums are totally Sherlockian, yet the sprinkling of steam-punk and otherworldly characters add an edge that most others 'in the style of' do not have.
A great deal of my congratulations must go to Klienman, the narrator, for his exemplary vowel modulation and upper middle class pronunciation of English, which lends the novel it's most convincing element.

New life into a classic character

An excellent story - vividly detailed and snappily paced, just as Conan Doyle's originals were - and well worth investing the time to listen.

My only complaint (and it is a very minor detraction) is the inconsistency of pronunciation on the part of the reader, sadly present both in English and also in the smattering of French which appears at points throughout the tale.
Not only is it jarring for the listener but it is inconsistent with the established character of Holmes himself - who would have learned impeccable French from his grandmother, Mme Camille Le Comte (née Vernet)

Not so great

I’m a big fan of Lovegrove’s continuation novels - loved the return to Baskerville- but this one just doesn’t quite do it for me. Mycroft, brighter than Holmes, thinks it’s a good idea to move the Queen from Buckingham Palace, so exposing her to terrorists? Rather the thickest one in the room nowadays! And Watson isn’t much better, more resembling Nigel Bruce to Basil Rathbone’s Sherlock Holmes. Disappointing- didn’t engage me much - though that doesn’t mean there weren’t some good set paces and observations, and I did listen to the end. I look forward to more of his SH books, and hope for the best…
