About this listen
Do you want to listen to Siddhartha? If so then keep reading....
The title of this novel is a combination of two Sanskrit words, “siddha,” which is defined as “achieved,” and “artha” which is defined as “meaning” or “wealth.” The word serves as the name for the principal character, a man on a spiritual journey of self-discovery during the time of the first Buddha. Siddhartha is the son of a wealthy Brahmin family who decides to leave his home in the hopes of gaining spiritual illumination. Siddhartha is joined by his best friend Govinda.
The two renounce their earthly possessions, engage in ritual fasting and intense meditation and ultimately seek out and speak with Gautama, the original Buddha. Here the two go their separate ways, Govinda joining the order of the Buddha, Siddhartha traveling on in search of spiritual enlightenment. In order to complete this novel Hesse immersed himself in the sacred teachings of both Hindu and Buddhist scriptures and lived a semi-reclusive life in order to achieve his own spiritual enlightenment.
Considered one of Hesse’s most important works, “Siddhartha” remains to this day as one of his most popular. It is a work that deals with the quest that we all undertake in some way or another, to define our lives in an environment of conflicting dualities and ultimately find spiritual awareness.

A beautiful morality tale - shame about the narration
A simple and beautiful morality tale, apparently effortless in its writing. It takes a lot of skill to make anything difficult look easy, and Hesse had that skill in bucketloads.
I held off from reading this book because I was disappointed by Steppenwolf, but I wish I hadn’t. There is none of the clunkiness of Steppenwolf in this tale.
The narration reminds me of someone in church doing the readings without having read them beforehand. Here, the narrator treats commas as full-stops; runs out of steam two-thirds of the way through long sentences (and restarts the sentence as if starting a new sentence); and, has a small number of (repeated) bad pronunciations (including ‘ve-neer-u-bl’ for ‘ven-uh-rub-bl’ and ‘learnd’ for learnuhd’).

A classic of German literature; an imperfect reading.
Hesse’s Siddhartha is a remarkable book, occupying an important place in German literature of the early 20th century - and enjoying a long afterlife in later culture. It renders, into relatively accessible language, key ideas of the thought of the day: the pursuit of knowledge, enlightenment and happiness, and the transmission of Eastern philosophy (particularly Hinduism and early Buddhism).
The translation here offered is generally sound and accessible; the only gripe would be the reading itself, with its occasional lapses in pronunciation (‘Hesse’, ‘venerable’, ‘laborious’, to name just a few). This notwithstanding: recommended listening for those without access to the original.

Robotic voice, no enjoyment
It’s like listening to a robot reading classics- a parody. I just couldn’t enjoy listening and will read the book instead.
