Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

Critic reviews

“The touch of fantasy interjected into this compelling audiobook is a unique departure from author Kate Quinn's usual historical fiction.… The narrators make the characters so real that listeners can suspend disbelief and feel their tension, grit, and cleverness. Both narrators display considerable linguistic talent as they portray these heroes with warmth and bravado.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

Enthralling quick read/listen

Nicely put together story and well executed performance making it difficult to put down. Obviously fiction but excellent idea and execution.

Loved it

Brilliant short story, listened without knowing what the story was about which gave me a real 'WHAT', left me wanting more of the two characters and brought a tear at the end, but in a good way 🥰

Wonderful

The most enthralling short story I’ve ever read and I’m 77. Brilliant from start to finish. The narration was spot on too. Any more like this?

Simply Brilliant

Absolutely loved this, both narrators brought WW2 and the 21st century blend to life. The story is captivating and I listened to the last chapter close before realising I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. Almost a modern day take with a twist on the David Niven film A Matter of Life and Death, I think it’d make a perfect film

It could be possible

As a child of 2nd world war Veterans, things are never discussed for very good reason. it came as no surprise to hear what Lady Rose went through in her job, like countless other brave souls!

Wonderful, touching story

Doesn’t fall into any of my usual genres, but I am so glad I took a chance on this. It takes place across two different timelines, but it’s not time-travel. The characters are very well developed and convincing against their chronological background. I particularly liked the way the story was rounded off.

Kudos to the narrators. Both did a brilliant job.

Highly recommended.
