About this listen

Rick Greenberg joined the Corps right out of high school because he always wanted to be a Marine. Little did he know what it would ultimately cost him to even approach earning such a title.

After boot camp, "Greeny", as he was later known by his Recon team buddies, attended radio communication school in San Diego, California.

As a radio operator, upon arrival in Vietnam, Greenberg was both surprised and troubled when he was arbitrarily assigned to the First Recon Battalion, generally considered to be an elite unit, and normally manned by volunteers. He soon learns he must adapt quickly, or risk going home in a body bag!

The battle scenes Greenberg masterfully draws in Silent Heroes are both realistic and gripping. They can easily send cold chills down the spines of combat veterans, and dispel any false notions or glorified myths held by non-combatants.

Compelling listening

A well written and delivered story. It really brought home the experience these troops went through

A Good listen

These guys describe their time in combat with such clarity and a certain amount of detachment. He knew it was going to haunt him though and I hope he was able to live a worthwhile and fulfilling life after his return home.

very good story well read

I'm always a fan of war veterans who start their story in the thick of the action, only to later wind back and run through things more chronological thereafter. I find this book brutally honest, in that it takes a big man, to later admit he enjoyed killing and it gave him a high like no other, and he was desperate to experience it just one more time before leaving country. Thankfully a high most of us will never experience. The narrator is brilliant, imitating various voices at different times perfectly. One of the best included nam experiences I've heard to date, right down to the dilemma faced by relaying questionable and even illegal orders down the radio. No wonder this guy suffered nightmares, I hope he later found some peace

Superb

Great insight into war that couldn’t be won. One of the best books I’ve read on this subject. Good narration too.

It wasn’t all gung-ho blood and guts!

I really enjoyed this book. I actually felt I was there sharing the authors experience. I started on WWII books about the pacific war, and read a synopsis of this when it was suggested as something I might like. I am glad it did. This is a very ‘real’ listening experience and I also thought the reader was very good. Would recommend this book if you like this genre.
