Summary

When DI Vera Stanhope finds the body of a woman in the sauna room of her local gym, she wonders briefly if, for once in her life, she’s uncovered a simple death from natural causes. Then Vera spots ligature marks around the victim’s throat....

Vera revels being back in charge of an investigation again, working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth to find a motive. While Joe struggles to reconcile his home life with the demands of the case, death has never made Vera feel so alive. The duo investigates the victim’s past and discovers a shocking case, involving a young child. Probing the secretive community, they try to stop a killer in the present who can’t seem to let go of the past.

the accents were excruciating and I nearly stopped listening several times. not sure I can put myself thru that again even for a good story.

Awful narrator

Spoilt for me by the terrible narrator. The attempts at accents were cringeworthy and also lowering her voice to be a male was just awful. I’ve abandoned this book after 1hr 10 minutes. A waste of a credit for me. Sorry just my opinion, it’s a good story ruined by the narrator.

Great story; hideous narration

Urgh, the narrator! Every woman except Vera gets this ridiculous, squeaky little voice... and don't get me started on her butchering of a Northern Irish accent. The story is great but the narrator distracts.

Anne Cleeves a storyteller who is believably.

This was a story that had you hooked from the start.
The narrator did an excellent job in the various characters and brought it to life.
I did read the story but the audible version did it well.

Another good yarn

Although Janine Birkett is an excellent overall narrator she cannot do other voices 'for love nor money' and should stop attempting anyone other than Vera Stanhope. However Cleves' stories are always intriguing enough for me to put up with peculiar narration and I enjoyed this one too.

Very enjoyable story with great characterisation. Anne Cleeves’ writing is superb.

It took me a while to get used to the different voices the reader put on for different characters. I found the Joe Ashworth voice particularly grating.

Brilliant narration

Even though the story is of murder and general unpleasantness, there’s a gentle quality to it all - so enjoyable with wonderful narration.

Great story

Really enjoyed this Vera book. I like the way the narration on Vera's thoughts is written exactly how she would say or think it. The narrator did a great job of the Northeast accents. Being from there myself I often avoid audiobooks which involve the narrator attempting a 'Geordie' accent as they usually make me cringe and distract me from the story but this one was brilliant.

Better than the TV Series

Loved this first Vera audiobook I have listened to. Looking forward to listening to more.

Vera brings it home.

As usual, rattling good yarn, excellent characterisation, real sense of place.
The fly in the ointment was the piping little girl voices given to the younger female characters and the whiny tones of the bourgeoise occupants of the village. Vera sounds like a half cut docker and poor old Ashworth is not accorded a decent male voice. Despite not being crazy about the reader, I will continue to enjoy the Vera series.
