Sad little story
Well read book and with a lot of the usual period interest but this is such a sad little story I was very depressed when I'd finished it.

poor book great reading
I love Trollope, but this is not a good one. The narrator reads beautifully though, and maybe for Trollope tragics this is worth it.

Great acting, solid story but a tragedy & no fun
As a bit of a Trollope addict I enjoyed this novel which I'd not previously listened to or read. Great writing, suspenseful, but with a sad ending and none of the usual wry humour which Trollope normally excels in. I must commend the narrator Tony Britton: this book was acted outstandingly well. It seemed like a whole cast of different actors were playing the various characters with great accomplishment. I'd love to hear more Trollope novels acted by him.

The first Anthony Trollope to disappoint.
I love everything I have read by Anthony Trollope, but not this one. The narration was like the curate's egg, good in parts. The depiction of the female protagonist was poor, an affected female voice which irritated. It was not helped by the poor plot which could have been told in half the pages.

Wonderful reading by Tony Britton
Early Trollope, a bit verbose but marvellous exposition of the psychology of the characters. One has to accept the social mores of the time(1840s 1860s?) but I was still annoyed by the ending.

Some excellent parts but low rating for constant racist language
Trigger warning; the book has very antisemitic themes and continually uses racist language using the analogy of identifying blackness of skin with ‘badness of character’. For many listeners this will be offensive and even harmful. It’s unnecessary for the plot, and although it’s supposedly typical of the time it’s not particularly typical of Trollope or of lots of high quality authors of the period so I don’t think that is an excuse.

Enough to put me off reading any more Trollope!
This story could have been told in around four paragraphs.
I was longing for the end to come.
I'm glad it's over.
Don't get me wrong, I love an author that rambles. Dickens is one of these authors. If it can be said in a hundred words, Dickens will use a thousand, but no - I found this book tedious, predictable and unnecessarily lengthy.
I shall not be downloading any more Trollope for some time to come.

Not a Simple Tale of Star Crossed Lovers
Trollope is very good when it comes to morality and the human intellect. He is forensic in analysing behaviour, exposing humbug, and his protagonists tend to show basic human kindness rather than religious diktats. Where he fails, in this book, is in characterisation. The characters are all stereotypes, the old gentry, the young wastrel, the faithful maiden and, as a result it's hard to really care about any of them. It's worth reading for Trollope's understanding of the human psyche and for the absurdity of the English class and inheritance system but it fails to come up to his usual high standard.

Trollope
I enjoy these stories for the intrigue suspense and elegant language. I often come back to Trollope and it never disappoints.
