About this listen

Lena Adams has spent her life struggling to escape her past. She has only unhappy memories of Reece, the small town that nearly destroyed her. She's made a new life for herself as a police detective in Heartsdale, a hundred miles away. But nothing could prepare her for the violence that explodes when she is forced to return. A vicious murder leaves a young woman incinerated beyond recognition. And Lena is the only suspect.

When Heartsdale Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, Lena's boss, receives word that his detective has been arrested, he has no choice but to go to Lena's aid, taking with him his wife, Medical Examiner Sara Linton. But soon after their arrival, a second victim is found. The town closes ranks. And both Jeffrey and Sara find themselves entangled in a horrifying underground world of bigotry and rage - a violent world which shocks even them, a world that puts their own lives in jeopardy.

Only Jeffrey and Sara can free Lena from the web of lies, betrayal, and brutality that has trapped her. But can they discover the truth before the killer strikes again?

Not quite sure what happened here.....

I love the Grant County series of books by Karin Slaughter, it's a good job really because if I didn't I'd have turned this performance off very quickly. The reader was good, she read clearly but large sections of the book were missed out, full pages just skipped, which made the story sound disjointed and awkward. There are also bizarre pieces of music played randomly over the words, they do t add anything to the story so I can't think why anyone decided it would be a good idea. what a shame, for the reader and the writer!

Ridiculous music and why? Oh why, did they abridge it?!!!!

I gave this five stars because I love the story and the series but fair warning: if you haven’t already read or listened to the full novel, DO NOT buy this version. What a waste! Also, every novel after this series feels like a poor, lustreless version of the Grant County novels.

Good story, not a good audio book.

Really enjoyed this next story in the series but the quality of the Audio in places was very jumpy missing words out. Tempted to ask for a refund.

Terrible editing

Kept jumping and repeating but got the gist of the story. Disappointed as usually enjoy. Narrator not the best

shame about the poor recording

The book is good. Shame about the poor sound levels, skips in the recording and odd sound effects that broke me out of the narrative

Awful quality

Audio skips throughout. Really spoilt the already ruined (by being abridged) story.
Really disappointed. Plus has random, stupid country music over the top of parts including the bloody ending.
Steer clear

Dreadful Narrator!

The narrator was awful. Character voices one dimensional. Story line good. Shouldn’t have been abridged.
Shall stick with Karin Slaughter as I think she writes really well.

Why spoil by abridging it

This serious has been really good but why oh why spoil it by cutting the book more than in half. Story jumped about missing huge chunks and the blooming country music over the bits they cut out really grated my nerves. I’m so glad I’d read these before as they have ruined the series on audible giving us the first 4 books in full then the last 3 in series taking up the same time as 1. Not a happy customer.

Annoying music intervals

The author, book and the series are brilliant. What spoils this is the audio recording which has music interjecting every so often like a marker to splice the audio? At the end of the book is a scene which is serious and intense but suddenly jazzy happy music is playing through the dialogue. Great book terrible recording.

Clitches

There are moments when music plays over the narrator ruining the feel of the chapter. This audible book was not recorded as well as others in the series. Even the ending was plays over by music. There were jumps in the recording, whether that was due to the download or a clitch with the recording. Story explained certain aspects of the Sara Lintons story leading into joining the Will Trent series. Ending was explosive - not just from myself shouting at the music ruining it.
