About this listen
The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Paul Murray's hilarious book, Skippy Dies. Read by the actor Patrick Moy.
'Skippy and Ruprecht are having a doughnut-eating race one evening when Skippy turns purple and falls off his chair . . .'
And so begins this epic, tragic, comic, brilliant novel set in and around Dublin's Seabrook College for Boys. Principally concerning the lives, loves, mistakes and triumphs of overweight maths-whiz Ruprecht Van Doren and his roommate Daniel 'Skippy' Juster, it features a frisbee-throwing siren called Lori, the joys (and horrors) of first love, the use and blatant misuse of prescription drugs, Carl (the official school psychopath), various attempts to unravel string theory . . . while at the same time exploring the very deepest mysteries of the human heart.
Critic reviews
"Marvellous, witty, heartbreaking, intensely moving, excellent. The writing is second to none, the banter brilliant. Crazy, but beautiful." (Daily Telegraph)
"One of the most enjoyable, funny and moving reads of this year. A rare tragicomedy that’s both genuinely tragic and genuinely comic." (The Guardian)
"Savagely funny, brimful of wit, energy, poetry and vision, unflaggingly entertaining. A triumph." (The Sunday Times)

Bittersweet
Fantastic characters brought to life by skilled narration. Laugh out loud moments amidst tragedy and outrageous behaviour. Highly recommend along with Bee Sting

sensational narrator
hands down the best narration I've heard from an audiobook.ore than 40 or so characters all tendered in their own distinct voice. The narrator is clearly having a ball recording this

What a brilliant second novel by Paul Murray
I am absolutely flabbergasted to read one of the reviews that gave this novel 1 Star !!!! I must have been listening to a different book as this is one of the most entertaining reads for a long time.To be both funny and heart wrenching takes some skill and Paul Murray has it in bucketfuls.Simply outstanding.
However I am just a little disappointed his first novel does not seem to be available on Audible. Will have to search it out on Kindle hopefully.

Wonderful!
I loved this audiobook. It really was wonderful. Incredibly funny for the most part, and terrifying as the mother of a young boy who will one day be a teenage boy!!

Brilliant story, brilliantly read.
Not just a fabulous story, but clever narration from a sensitive reader. Didn’t want it to finish. Laugh, cry, cringe a bit, beautiful book.

Really enjoyed this as an audio book.
I picked this purely by accident and hadn't paid attention to the reviews, which I am glad I didn't.
I personally found it had so many insights into human nature that were subtle and wound around each character. I think you need to be in touch with youth to understand that the characters are small segments of teenagers thoughts.

Hilarious and brilliantly observed.
Incredible cast of characters, sympathetic despite all their messy flaws. Amazing scope. The narrator deserves an award for the multiple accents as well. Loving this book.

Superb narrator
A funny and touching story of the events surrounding the death of Skippy, a teenage boy in an Irish boarding school.
Lots of laugh out loud moments in the first part of the book. The story understandably becomes quite dark later but the stand out star is the narrator who keeps the momentum going, capturing every voice and every expression. I would definitely listen to another Paul Murray book read by the same narrator.

Absolutely brilliant!
What a completely fantastic listen !
The narrator captured the beautiful writing perfectly. The story was both laugh out-loud (which I frequently did!) & tear-jerkingly poignant. The characters were so real I feel that now I’ve finished listening I’m going to miss them - they were wonderfully observed & fabulously brought alive by the narration. I absolutely loved this book - recommended wholeheartedly…

Amazing performance
I don’t remember buying this book, I’m guessing it was in a sale. And furthermore I can’t imagine I realised it was 20+ hours long, as I would tend to steer well clear of something so long - easily the longest book I’ve listened to so far. But however I came about it, I’m pleased I did.
The writing is wonderful and the narration is superb, by far the best I’ve heard. I’ll actively search out more books read by Patrick Moy, I thought he was so impressive. He made those 20hrs suddenly seem not so daunting. A really enjoyable book that manages to hold the attention throughout and raise a laugh now and again. I really enjoyed it.
