About this listen
Book 1 in the best-selling Bite Back series "Vampires are the flickering illusions of Hollywood. They don't exist. We do. We are the Athanate."
For Amber Farrell, post-military life as a PI has its ups and downs: She's been hit by a truck. She's being sued by a client. Denver's newest drug lord just put out a contract on her. The sinister Athanate want her to come in for a friendly chat. And it's only Tuesday. Enter Jennifer Kingslund: rich, gorgeous - a tough businesswoman who's known for getting what she wants in the boardroom and the bedroom. Someone's trying to sabotage her new resort and destroy her company - and she wants Amber to find out who. The answers lead Amber past Were and Adept, right back to the Athanate - and a centuries-old war that could threaten not just Denver, but the nation that Amber swore to protect and serve. And all sides want to claim her for their own...

vampire's Kiss
Sleight Of Hand. Bite Back Book 1.
By Mark Henwick .
My review.
Not dead. Yet. Not undead either, but the odds are stacking up against Amber.
Denver’s brutal drug gangs want her dead, but there's no chance for her to hide away. Her PI business is already struggling to get by, and she has to take a job for a wealthy local businesswoman, Jennifer Kingslund.
I'd had this on my kindle for a while before reading it and I lament the wasted time, this is urban fantasy done very well indeed, for once more than deserving of the hype.
We meet Amber, a PI, ex Special forces, ex police and struggling to control the fact that soon she may well succumb to the vampire bite that has changed her life.
Involved in a case that suddenly becomes not only complicated but dangerous she struggles to balance not only her desires and the seductive pull of the dark inside her, but to protect the people in her life all the while slowly being exposed to the greater supernatural forces hiding from normal sight.
This is book one of an ongoing series, and one that I will definitely continue. Amber was a cracking protagonist, funny, kick arse and more than competent, but also empathetic, clever and with a strong moral core. This story was fast paced and well thought out and the continuous arch of Amber's introduction to the world of the paranormal has begun really well and I eagerly wait to find out where this dangerous path will lead her.
The action was handled really well and was well thought out. The plot is fast and breezy and definitely has room to grow... All in all a fantastic read. On to book two soon.

3.5 due to narrator mostly
I really enjoyed the story here, a nice twist on the usual vampire story but the narrators voice was very monotonous and her characters were a bit stale at times. Also you know those snappy one liners.authors put another end of a chapter....they were delivered almost an an afterthought....not sure whether to listen based on narrator might get the paper book instead tho as I'm intrigued to see where Amber goes next.

Very nice audiobook!
I was given a promotional code in exchange for a fair review.
Some time ago, I stumbled across the Athanate books and very much enjoyed them. Book 4 will be published soon and I will get it. In between, I have been listening to the audio books and I felt that that story went very well with this format. To me, it brought the story a little bit more alive and I very much enjoyed listening to them. So if you have the chance, go grab them!

Small, disconnected stories
The audiobook felt like a series of small, disconnected stories rather than a cohesive narrative to really get into. I enjoyed the reader’s performance, but I just couldn’t connect with the main character. Her personality felt inconsistent, swaying between self-made confidence and needing help, followed by bouts of crying, which didn’t resonate with me. Overall, it didn’t leave a strong impression, and I won’t be getting the next book.
