Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the
New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and one of the world's top productivity experts, a groundbreaking philosophy for creating great work at a sustainable pace.

Hustle culture. Burnout. Quiet quitting. Today we're either sacrificing ourselves on the altar of success or we're rejecting the idea of ambition entirely. But it doesn't have to be all or nothing. There is a way to create meaningful work as part of a balanced life, and it's called 'slow productivity'.

Coined by Cal Newport, the bestselling author of Deep Work and Digital Minimalism, slow productivity is a revolutionary philosophy based on three simple principles:

1. Do fewer things.

2. Work at a natural pace.

3. Obsess over quality.

Examining the stories and habits of ancient and modern scientists, philosophers, artists and scholars who worked in this way, Newport reveals just how transformative the slow productivity approach can be to producing a meaningful body of work.

From managing your energy according to the season, to identifying which projects to pursue and which to set aside, to building a schedule that yields maximum output with minimum stress, this timely and essential book will revolutionise how you work, helping you to accomplish great things at a more humane pace.

A different take on productivity

Diligent research and excellent explanation through story telling. Wonderfully narrated. A joy to listen to from beginning to end.

Long-term thinking about success

- I enjoyed the stories used to drive across the concept of slow productivity
- It'll take some time to frame/integrate the principles into my life, but the lessons are quite practical.
- The methods provided on time management are applicable to a lot of situations and can work for me.
- The duration was reasonable and the way they're delivered kept me locked in.

Overall an amazing book, I'm considering getting a physical copy. Gratitude to the author and much respect for all his contributions. 👏🏿

Nice to hear someone speaking out against the madness!

Lovely book, being a little easier on myself after listening to it. I don’t have a traditional job, so working for yourself it’s hard to draw that line between work and free time. This has helped me work out what’s important.

Almost a relief to read.

The pressure to work on many things simultaneously is big for me, particularly from myself but this book has shown me that I may be even more effective by doing fewer things better and at a more natural pace.

Valuable ideas, many stories

A book containing valuable and useful ideas, placed under the pretentious name of "philosophy." These ideas are really important, but they could only be expressed in an essay. But if these ideas had been expressed only in an esseay, they probably would not have spread as they have through this book. So, the author chose to prove the validity of his ideas with the help of far too many life stories (too many in my opinion) collected from the entire history of mankind.

Good but not what I was seeking

First part started well and along the lines of what I hoped for/ the latter ended up being a series of short bio examples of others and their choices. Really interesting but not what I needed to make a shift towards a more reasonable life

Counter-intuitive but provocative advice

I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on knowledge work and found through personal experience that deliberate and intentional focus on improving my own craftsmanship has helped me advance in ways beyond what I would’ve achieved had I taken the route of blindly working myself into burnout. Granted I had to learn this the hard way at the start of my 22+ year career!

Very winding slow paced book

The book is pitched presumably at People’s interested in productivity but I found the pace and long stories within far too slow and winding for my tastes. I’ve enjoyed some of Cal’s other books more
