Summary
Bloomsbury presents Soldier ‘I’ by Michael Paul Kennedy, Pete Winner and Andy McNab, read by Paul Thornley.
No publicity, no media. We move in silently, do our job and melt away into the background. If you have the stamina, the willpower and the guts, we'll welcome you with open arms and make you one of us. And if you haven't, then it's been very nice knowing you. Eighteen years in the SAS saw Pete Winner, codenamed Soldier 'I', survive the savage battle of Mirbat, parachute into the icy depths of the South Atlantic at the height of the Falklands War and storm the Iranian Embassy during the most famous hostage crisis in the modern world. For the first time, Pete also details his close-protection work around the world, from the lawless streets of Moscow to escorting aid convoys into war-torn Bosnia. He also unveils the problems of post-traumatic stress disorder faced by many Special Forces veterans and how he battled his own demons to continue his roller-coaster career. This is his story, written with a breath-taking take-no-prisoners attitude that brings each death-defying episode vividly to life.

A compelling memoir badly narrated
I did really enjoy the early focus of this book on Pete's internal life, the factors which have affected his psychological health and views throughout his life. The account drifted a bit into straightforward storytelling later. The pace of the narration was too slow and monotonic. Pete has so many fascinating stories to tell and I look forward to reading/hearing his experiences and thoughts in more detail.

Boring
I usually enjoy military stories, but I found this book to be deadly boring so I was forced to give up. Maybe it's because I'm female and was never involved myself in military activities, but my dad is retired from the US Air Force, and my late husband was retired from HM Armed Forces. So I've heard it and enjoyed it almost all of my life. But this just never caught my attention.

Boring tripe
Gave up after two and a half hours. I don't understand why every other main word needs one or more adjectives.

A bit of a sudden ending
A bit of a weird and sudden ending. Could have been a bit better thought out.
