Summary

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.

After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon.

Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than him.

They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other more suitable matches. Still, they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love....

A bit unbelievable

It’s not unheard of for a man to marry a woman 9 years younger than her, and indeed must happened a lot in the era the book is written in, as many married for titles and money.
However, it’s a little unbelievable that in the circumstances in this book, most people just accepted it.
Also getting repetitive in the series as betrothal balls etc all the same.

A difficult situation handle well.

The hero and heroine are not the standard characters. He is nine years younger and her brother-in-law, she a widow recovering from an abused marriage.
The forces that blighted her sister-in-law's life come back to plague the couple.
It has it's ups and downs, but is believable and cohesive.

Stress release

A gentle story with delightful characters and a happy outcome. Rosalind Landor's honeyed tones do it full justice.

Superb!

This book has been the perfect tonic to the stress of life lately. A gentle but brilliantly done plot with some great side characters, who I'd love to hear more from in the future. Wonderfully narrated by Rosalyn Landor as always.

Not What I Expected

I had hoped for more from the character of Elizabeth. Of all of the characters, hers was the most kind and compassionate, loving and kind. So this story made her (in my opinion) a bit milk and water…

I didn’t really enjoy this, I didn’t get the full potential of it. It just all seemed a bit shallow (perhaps I didn’t get it).

Just okay…

If you’ve got nothing else to read then this is something you can read to pass the time.

I do find the endless internal rumination of both characters a bit tedious… but I suppose this is the theme in most of Mary Balogh’s books.

Also had to speed up the narration a bit.

Nothing offensive about this story but nothing great either.. it’s… just okay.
