About this listen

From the best-selling author of Skinny Dip and Razor Girl, a hilarious new novel of social and political intrigue, set against the glittering backdrop of Florida’s Gold Coast.

It’s the height of the Palm Beach charity ball season: for every disease or cause, there’s a reason for the local luminaries to eat (minimally), drink (maximally) and be seen. But when a prominent high-society dowager suddenly vanishes during a swanky gala and is later found dead in a concrete grave, panic and chaos erupt. Kiki Pew was notable not just for her wealth and her jewels - she was an ardent fan of the winter White House resident just down the road and a founding member of the Potussies, a group of women dedicated to supporting their president. Never one to miss an opportunity to play to his base, the president immediately declares that Kiki was the victim of rampaging immigrant hordes. This, it turns out, is far from the truth.

The truth might lie in the middle of the highway, where a bizarre discovery brings the first lady’s motorcade to a grinding halt (followed by some grinding between the first lady and a lovestruck Secret Service agent). Enter Angie Armstrong, wildlife wrangler extraordinaire, who arrives at her own conclusions after she is summoned to the posh island to deal with a mysterious and impolite influx of huge, hungry pythons....

Carl Hiaasen brightens even the darkest of days and Squeeze Me is pure, unadulterated Hiaasen. irreverent, ingenious and highly entertaining, Squeeze Me perfectly captures the absurdity of our times.

Critic reviews

“The undisputed master of organized chaos.... Hiaasen’s satire is a fierce unmuzzled snarl, swiftly followed by a painfully ironic bite. Quite simply, brilliant.” (The Sunday Times)

“Carl Hiaasen [is] a superb national satirist.... A great American writer about the great American subjects of ambition, greed, vanity and disappointment.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“[Hiaasen is] a master of the comic crime novel.” (The Daily Telegraph)

Quite enjoyable

Not Carl Hiassens best but even his medium is a great listen and bolstered by a great performance by Scott Brick. Contemporary and scathing the plot skewers Palm Beach’s finest and captures the couple as they no doubt likely are.

Five Star Carl!

I discovered this writer through Razor Girl and have now read nearly all his amazing books. The stories craft fact and fiction in a mesmerising fashion all overlaid by a dark humour. As a Brit I find American society and politics fascinating and love the way Carl develops his characters in a most humorous and believable way.
More please Carl !!!!

Best yet

Excellently paced, wonderful characters entertaining throughout and brilliantly read.
Looking forward to the next book as it seems we have a fascinating New heroine as an older character seems to be retiring!

Bring back Ed Winchester!

I'm sorry, but this was spoilt for me by Scott Brick's style. Though Jeff Harding obviously wouldn't have changed the story, he would undoubtedly have increased my overall enjoyment by at least one star, and probably two.

Bit too politically bias for my liking

I felt the book was far too political for my relaxation time.
when I listen or read a funny novel I do not want the author's politics rammed down my throat during every chapter.

Politics Trumps Plot

Unfortunately this isn’t up there with Hiaasen’s best. There are some interesting ideas in there but they’re waylaid by the author’s anger at the now ex-inhabitant of the White House (fans of the orange one really best give this book a miss!).
Whilst I agree with the author on that point I found that his endless focus on ‘Mastodon’ and ‘Mockingbird’ didn’t make for the usual humorous chaos of Hiaasen’s books. The reality of that term of office was so unbelievable that it’s an almost impossible task to satirise it successfully.
The narration is fine. Scott Brick has a pleasant voice to listen to but does little to differentiate between characters so everyone sounds pretty much the same.
Two stars for story seems a bit harsh but this novel definitely needed more time in the oven to craft a solid more coherent story and develop characters beyond cardboard cutouts.
I’d suggest spending your credit on Skinny Dip instead!
