Summary

William Stoner wird 1891 als Sohn armer Farmer in Missouri geboren. Das Landwirtschaftsstudium lässt er ohne Reue hinter sich, als er seine Liebe zur Literatur entdeckt. Hart arbeitet er für seinen Aufstieg, bringt es bis zum Professor. Doch sonst ist sein Leben enttäuschungsreich: Seine Ehefrau entpuppt sich als gefühlskalte Intrigantin, die seine enge Beziehung zur Tochter zerstört, die leidenschaftliche Liebe zu einer Studentin muss er aufgeben. Und ein Widersacher an der Uni setzt alles daran, Stoners Reputation zu beschädigen. Ein großartiger Roman über einen Mann, der seine Würde durch alle Widernisse rettet.
