Summary

Jenny Colgan returns with all her signature charm in this fourth installment of her Maggie Adair series. The Little School by the Sea is a magical place of friendship, striving, excitement and plenty of mischief.

Maggie Adair, the passionate, devoted English teacher at Downey House, is about to ride off into the sunset with her new love when tragedy strikes. Pulled from their happy-ever-after, she and David must put their budding romance aside until they return for a new term, unsure where they now stand.

A fresh new year at Downey House comes with more drama from the students - with Fliss and Alice at odds after a summer apart, and Simone trying to nurture her new relationship while dealing with exam stresses, the new term is shaping up to be a challenge for all...

First class narrator! Story was frustrating in a few places and great in other places

I was waiting for this book to come out for a while, after the last book of the series ended in an odd way.

It was well written. However, I was so disappointed / frustrated that one of the previous characters was a big focus at the start and then kept getting mentioned, I was really hoping they’d be out of it. I also find Maggie’s family incredibly frustrating, so selfish! Then the ending!!! I won’t spoiler it.

I really enjoyed all the storyline about the schools becoming linked together, which isn’t a spoiler as it was talked about in the previous book. So well written and highly entertaining, and probably quite realistic. I wish there were more books in this series. br />
Overall I really enjoyed the book and the narrator was first class, as she always is! Perfect timing, accents and emotion.

Definitely worth listening to, even if a mixed bag

After waiting for this book, the fourth book in the series, for several years, so long in fact I'd given up on it. I was pleased to find it was coming out, unfortunately after such a long wait it was spoilt by a strange quirk in the storyline at the beginning that didn't seem to make sense. I forgave that by the end, as Maggie and David do finally get there act together, although it was a bit frustrating that the will they, won't they(?) element was still carrying on during this book, after they get together at the end of the previous book. And why change the narrator? Although this one is perfectly fine. Other than that it's worth it all! As I would rather have a sequel than not. 🎆

I struggled to finish.

I enjoyed the other series by Jenny Colgan, so tried to like this one. I often felt frustrated with the characters, especially David. Plus I have never heard of Sheffield dockside despite living and working there.😅
