Story
In the summer between second and third year at Whitehall, Emily accompanies Lady Barb on her rounds of the Cairngorm Mountains, bringing magical help to the locals and searching for new magicians. For Emily, tired and broken after the events of Study in Slaughter, it should be a chance to relax as well as to visit a new part of the Nameless World, to put her responsibilities aside and just be herself. But the locals aren't quite what she expects, with problems of their own, and Lady Barb is a different person away from Whitehall.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Elaine is an orphan girl who has grown up in a world where magical ability brings power. Her limited talent was enough to ensure a magical training, but she's very inexperienced and was lucky to get a position working in the Great Library. Now, the Grand Sorcerer - the most powerful magician of them all - is dying, although initially that makes little difference to Elaine; she certainly doesn't have the power to compete for higher status in the Golden City. But all that changes when she triggers a magical trap....

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Summary
Brimming with new ideas for magical research, Emily returns to Whitehall School for her second year of magical education, looking forward to returning to her studies. And yet things are different; her new roommates harbor their secrets, her old friends are becoming distracted by sports and games, and one of the teachers seems to dislike her. As she starts new classes, she discovers she has to work far harder to keep her place in the school.
But her second year will be far more adventurous than her first. When it becomes clear that there is a murderer - and a spy - in the school, Emily will be the only one who can save the school from a plot aimed right at the heart of the Allied Lands themselves. And yet her curiosity may very well prove her undoing.

Number Three in great series.
Excellent narration by Tavia Gilbert great voices for the characters in the story. I also appreciate that she is the continuing narrator for this series.
I wish that Audible had a waiting list so that we would be notified when the next book in the series is released.
This series is a fun read and a real treat to listen to. The story flows smoothly characters keep their individuality and believability.
I was sorely disappointed when I could not purchase book four
Emphatically yes on the entire series so far and of course start with book one. this story does stand by itself still it is so much better if you start at the beginning .

Not bad, but frustrating
The plot and main points of the book are good. Written as an outline I would definitely think this would be an awesome book...
But I found the whole story very tiring and frustrating. I was annoyed at the main character, and constantly wondering what the heck was going on. The whole story was less interesting / enjoyable than the first two books.
But ah-ha! We have the reason at the end!
I dislike such explanations. I had trouble figuring out if the main character was 17, or 13. Was she a young woman bordering on adulthood, or a child that couldn't see beyond her own reckless desires.
At the end of the book, I guess I'm just supposed to forgive this... But I simply can't excuse all these powerful side characters being absolutely useless.
The whole book was a series of blunders, impotence, ignorance, and a complete disregard of common sense and logic. AND THEN you have to keep hearing about how much the world has changed.
Really? Has it changed? Because all I see is people making the same dumb mistakes, and everyone running around like they don't know what to do, or how to do anything about it.
"Let's turn to the 13/17 year old girl/woman for answers."
The narrator is great, and the major plot points of the book sound great on paper... But the book is poorly fleshed out and it doesn't leave me enjoying it like the first two.
I hear the rest are much better.

amazing sequel to the first and second
I don't normally do reviews because I get embarrassed very easily at what I write. But this one is an exception. it was so good I couldn't let it go. I even found a way to listen to it at work. it was an amazing follow story to the high action second book. although it had a similar feel to a particular Harry Potter book(heck it's even referenced in there), but I won't say witch because spoilers.
Thank you for a great book and a great performance.

Entire series all I want in an Audible fantasy
Extremely well and cleverly plotted, absolutely love the in-depth explanation of magic in this world, and I am keenly interested in all the characters. I seem to like the ones set during school more, though it is early going for me to conclude that definitively.
Very happy I found this series. It is quite immersive and hard to put down. Writing this review/updating it after second or third listen. Terrific narrator.
Well-done!! I have enjoyed it more, re-listening, especially the non-mimic parts. I delved into the details more. But, I have this image of Emily with a sour expression in my head, because sourly and sour are seriously over-used to describe her thoughts and expression. The author is very talented, and a prodigious writer, but that sticks with me, and I also loathe the spanking punishments. Those are the only two flaws, as far as I am concerned.

too much plagiarism
this book had many ways it could have gone and certainly had its differences from book 2 of Harry Potter, but has so many similarities that I couldn't help noticing the blatant plot points, characters thoughts, schools attitude or atmosphere, and even characters that were too close to characters in Harry Potter. the beginning and end of the book are where it defers mostly.
