Summary

It’s high summer when Molly Pargeter drags her amiably bickering family to a rented Tuscan villa for the holidays. Molly is sure that the house is the perfect setting for their three-week getaway, but soon she becomes fascinated by the lives of the absent owners and things start to go horribly wrong.

A period piece which time has not faded

I was doubtful about this book as I am not a great lover of Rumpole but this is a different genre but I thoroughly enjoyed it and liked the heroine.

Skillfully written and a brilliant voice performance.

I think those who enjoy Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman might enjoy this novel. It is more than a Who dunnit .

It is a novel of its time before we were Woke and is set in the 1980s and the older characters express views of an earlier time . Think of it as a period piece. It is part mystery and part comedy of manners set in Tuscany. I learned quite a bit.

John Mortimer doesn’t disappoint

A wonderful story full of well drawn characters who were excellently portrayed by Martin Jarvis. This would make the perfect holiday read/listen

Beautifully written and very well narrated. I very much enjoyed listening to it.

Just finished it and can recommend it heartily. Not a rip roaring story but enjoyable nonetheless.

Brilliant!

Loved it! Very witty story of a family holiday with mystery and farce combined.
So good to have a story set in Italy that doesn’t involve a gloomy 30-something looking for love.

Brilliant Narration

The narrator of this story was superb. He was so good and the dialogue so funny, the story itself was secondary although entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.

Excellent on all Counts

Had read the paper version twice before. The audio version is excellent with the different characters read by Martin Jarvis with believable voices. Part detective novel / part comedy and as set in August in Tuscany slso makes for relaxing bedtime listening.

Not brilliant

The usual clever Mortimer characterisation but some characters didn't feel real and the plot twists were signalled clearly.

Just brilliant

Funny, witty, perceptive. A complete joy. Martin Jarvis was suberb as the narrator.

We laughed all the way through.
