About this listen

Meet "Sweetwater" and "Sundance" — two of the most outrageous and daring jet jockeys ever to sit behind the controls of an F-14. Assigned to the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, these boys are living life to the fullest: harassing Russian recon planes...raising hell on shore leave...testing the limits of their jets, their commanding officers, and their own reputations as the Navy's best.

Sweetwater Gunslinger 201 is a Top Gun novel that tells it like it really is. A high-flying adventure you'll never forget....

Prepare for a ride of equal parts fun and cringe!

This was an interesting one. I want to start out by saying that it was very entertaining and if you are looking for an easy going naval aviation story that checks all your prejudices about Maverick-esque fighter pilots with fast jets and even faster women, then this is for you. However, if you are not amused by sexual fantasies as if dreamed up by a teenager, then you might struggle a lot with the first half of this book.

Secondly, I really need to comment on the narration. The narrators voice is deep and rumbling and he really puts emphasis on loooong draawnout vowels. This style of reading really put me off and it took me a good two thirds of the book to get used to it. It is extra cringeworthy during the book's "romantic" scenes.

The book really feels like it is thematically split into two distincts act. The first one is fun, light-hearted, and filled with sexual adventures and brave flying. I had quite a few good laughs from it.
The second part might surprise you though, as it takes on a slightly different tone and deals with issues that are a bit more mature and interesting.

The mix of these two distinct tones actually made the story quite enjoyable for me and it felt like the story progressed in an interesting way and had a very clear arc.

In conclusion, if you are not afraid of cheesy "romance" and you are a fan of military aviation, I would whole-heartedly recommend this book. However, due to the narration I really would recommend you just read this book instead.
