About this listen

The story of one man in World War II. TJ operated in the UK, Norway, Ireland, USA, Canada, Bermuda, Italy, and Austria.

This is a true story, it is a war story, it is anti-war story, and it is a love story.

All TJ wanted was the peace and time to love Liz, a fellow MI6 agent. Should they dare hope for a life together after the war? And, even if they survived, could their love?

This should become a film

Wow! I cried during this audio book. What a fantastic journey and story which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Do not let the length of this book be off putting, I didn’t want it to end.
What an insightful view into world war 2.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

Compelling

Wow, what a story. It is almost unbelievable that all this could happen to one man, but it did. The story of TJ and his life throughout the second world War, the intertwined love story, and the inevitable sadness of his alcohol addiction make for a compelling journey.
I really enjoyed the historical aspect also, and have learned a lot more about WW2 than I previously ever knew.
Do not let the 23 hours put you off. It is well invested time. I actually couldn't wait for my commute to work to listen to the next chapter. The narrator is fantastic, it felt like he was acting it out from a play. His accents are quite amazing. I actually got the book initially but had no time to read it, hence downloading the audio version. On occasion I would go to read a chapter and it was not the same without the narrators voice, so I would go back to the audio!
The book was very well researched and written. Really recommend it.

Outstanding!

This is a book so good I’ll never listen to it again! Once is enough! A prospective on the war not written on! Health criticism of everybody involved from Churchill to politicians and allied command

Narrator was fabulous production and all involved was brilliant well done

A must listen for those who have a health interest in the truth of war that a very fine line separates the good from the bad the victorious write the history

Absolutely Incredible, Cannot recommend it enough!

TJ’s War took my attention from the first chapter and held me there in a steady state of intrigue and quiet awe all the way to the end; the word gripping does not do it justice. Iain Maclean, the author, has written the incredible story of his father in such a way that the book seems to breathe for itself.
TJ’s War is the story of one man’s journey through World War II, the path he travels down, those he meets, and what he must do to live with the horrors of what he finds along the way. This tale paints a very different picture of World War II than usually portrayed by popular media, and opens one’s mind to a completely different perspective to the norm.
Reading this story you connect with the characters, feeling as even though they are long gone, you actually knew them. You form relationships with the characters and feel the pain of loss when they have gone. The writing style is methodical and full of detail without ever reaching the point of being verbose. Historical information and explanation is filtered in, in a way that makes even the most complicated concepts appear quite straight forward and the descriptions of locales paint a picture in your mind’s eye more vivid that of a photo.
The book is incredibly well researched and I cannot recommend it enough, it makes me want to go research my family history in the hope that one of them also had such an extraordinary past.

Fascinating Story, Written with Feeling

A war story with a love story sub-plot or vice versa? It could be either, but whichever it is, it’s an incredible story of one man’s experiences during the horrors of the Second World War, beautifully written by that man’s son.

The trauma, the anguish, suffering and pain and the snatched moments of joy, success and happiness that kept TJ going are all told with feeling and a level of detail that almost brought them to life.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to TJ’s War - I’m sure there’s a movie in there!

Intriguing story of one man’s story of WW2

First of all, what a great listen. I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing story of one man’s adventures/horrors/life. From the backwaters of the Highlands in Scotland to the big city of Edinburgh to attend university, only to be shipped off to the 2nd world war within days of arriving in Edinburgh.

A great insight into one man’s perspective and the complexities of WW2. From moving through the various units of the British Army/Intelligence services and the horrors that brought, along with having the capability to find love throughout those chaotic years.

Highly recommend this book whether you are a reader or a listener via audible like me!

Finally, this story made me want to know more about my father and his involvement in the war. It has inspired me to find out more, so my 10yr old daughter and I are going to do a mini research project on my father, her grandfather who she has never met. It should be good learning for both of us, from different perspectives!
