In the Old Kingdom, a land of ancient and often terrible magics, 18-year-old orphan Terciel learns the art of necromancy from his great-aunt Tizanael. He is the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, and Tizanael is the Abhorsen, the latest in a long line of people whose task it is to make sure the Dead do not return to life.
Across the Wall in Ancelstierre, a steam-age country where magic usually does not work, 19-year-old Elinor lives a secluded life. Her only friends an old governess and an even older groom who was once a famous circus performer. Her mother is a tyrant who is feared by all despite her sickness and impending death...but perhaps there is even more to fear from that.
Elinor does not know she is deeply connected to the Old Kingdom, nor that magic can sometimes come across the Wall, until a plot by an ancient enemy of the Abhorsens brings Terciel and Tizanael to Ancelstierre. In a single day of fire and death and loss, Elinor finds herself set on a path that will take her into the Old Kingdom, into Terciel’s life, and will embroil her in the struggle of the Abhorsens against the Dead who will not stay dead.

Great book
Loved the book, its a great prequel to the Abhorsen series, but also works well as a stand alone novel. It's not quite as dark as other books in the Old Kingdom series but still has a great gripping storyline.
Billie's narration is excellent, providing a good depth and variety of characterisaions. I'm also really pleased that they used a British actress for this. There are some differences in the pronunciation of certain character names but this does not detract from the performance

A nostalgic prequel
As someone who fell in love with Sabriel, and has enjoyed all The Old Kingdom books since, I really enjoyed this latest addition, even if I don’t think it was at quite the same level. The performance was also really solid, even if not quite at the level of Curry.

excellent return to the old kingdom for an old fan
I was delighted with so many references to well known and well loved people and places, yet the plot was original and kept me interested the entire way through. I'm really grateful I bought this audiobook.

Completion of the quintology
Great story with lots of time dealing with death and the greater dead as in earlier books. Interesting twist at the end.

Full circle
I first read Sabriel when I was young and it engrossed my imagination and I waited in earnest for the sequels over the years and enjoyed each one immensely, now the story is complete thank you for such a pleasure late in life.

Good prequel
enjoyed this story, not as much as sabriel but a very good prequel. hope this prequel will have a sequel.
Nice to see and hear some familiar names and characters. need more of moggit/morgrim
