Summary

Shannon Chakraborty, the bestselling author of The City of Brass, launches a new trilogy of magic and mayhem with this tale of pirates and sorcerers, forbidden artefacts and ancient mysteries, and one woman’s quest to seize a final chance at glory…

A pirate of infamy and one of the most storied and scandalous captains to sail the seven seas.

Amina al-Sirafi has survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

But when she’s offered a job no bandit could refuse, she jumps at the chance for one final adventure with her old crew that will make her a legend and offers a fortune that will secure her and her family’s future forever.

Yet the deeper Amina dives the higher the stakes. For there’s always risk in wanting to become a legend, to seize one last chance at glory, to savour just a bit more power…and the price might be your very soul.

Critic reviews

‘A thrilling, transportive adventure that is everything promised – Chakraborty’s storytelling is fantasy at its best.’
R.F Kuang, the SUNDAY AND NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of BABEL

‘Chakraborty's seafaring adventure is pure incandescence and adrenaline. Readers will leave these pages with their lungs full of ocean air, their fingertips glittered with magic and their hearts a little heavier for being both smitten and heartbroken by its finely drawn, poignant cast of characters. This is a book I will daydream of for years to come’ Roshani Chokshi, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of THE GILDED WOLVES

‘Chakraborty delivers again with a captivating story of motherhood, faith, friendship, dangerous magic, and hijinks on the high seas. Amina al-Sirafi is now my favorite pirate captain and I’m on board to follow all her adventures’
Fonda Lee, author of The Green Bone Saga

‘Chakraborty’s latest unfurls like a scroll of ancient parchment, conjuring realer-than-life monsters, menacing magic, and a heroine with a gnarled, beating heart. An exhilarating, propulsive adventure, stitched from the threads of real history, Amina’s adventures are the reason to read fantasy. I’ll follow this captain and her crew anywhere’
Ava Reid, internationally bestselling author of THE WOLF AND THE WOODSMAN

‘A marvellous and enthralling tale filled with wonders (and horrors), the best of which is Amina herself: witty, conflicted, loyal, ambitious, (mostly) honest, (occasionally) foul-mouthed, and so very relatable as she struggles to save herself, her crew, and the family she loves but so often left behind’
Kate Elliott, author of UNCONQUERABLE SUN and SERVANT MAGE

What A Fabulous Adventure

I listened to and read the ebook via Kindle Whispasync.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story, listening whilst driving and doing housework and reading when I was able.
This tale is a grand adventure, but one for an older audience. I loved the beautiful descriptions and vivid storytelling. I liked that the mc wasn’t ravishingly beautiful, and appreciated the real conflict between wanting to both do her job and be with her family.

I was captivated by the characters and storyline. I would definitely love more Amina al Sarafi adventures!

Absolute must read

I love how the writer uses the mythology of the arab world to portray a beautiful story ! We need more of this in the world this story adds an element of diversity and perspective where in her stories you can feel like she speaks to a group of people who maybe don't always feel like they are represented otherwise.. so thanks Shannon for writing your books and I hope to read more of them

Mesmerizing

I loved this book and enjoyed it beyond what I expected initially!
The premises and characters are a breath of fresh air. Amina is one of my top female characters of all time. The depth of her character and all characters for that matter, is amazing. She’s far from a shallow idealist, we see her as a mother, a warrior , a wife and a friend each side is more relatable than the other. The world building and fight scenes are world class too. The narrator deserves her flowers too. She did an excellent job of capturing each character essence and voicing emotions.

Fantastic!

An adventure in the vein of Sinbad the Sailor from the 1001 Arabian Nights. Fantastic!

Fun!

As a youth I would watch those old Sinbad movies at the cinema and on tv. This book is basically a Sinbad story with the protagonist being gender flipped and middle aged and I loved it. From the beginning when Amina reveals her true nature to two naive youths I was hooked.

Magical adventures & swashbuckling galore

I loved this! Strong characters, lyrical storytelling, some very, very funny bits & some sad bits too. Also some excellent swearing. I kept thinking it was like a better, funnier, more feminist version of Sinbad the Sailor.

Absolute delight, don't hesitate

Wonderful, wonderful wonderful. I loved every moment of this, I'm sorry I can't scrub it from my brain and jump right back in at the start. The narration is fantastic, the characters grab you and whisk you along with them and I don't really want to leave the Marawati at all.

Oh my goodness!

What a story. It's amazing. I love tales of derring-do from all cultures, but to have a woman as the hero in this medieval adventure from worlds I've never explored was a treat. Beautifully read, and I'd say suitable for children who have loved Tolkien and CS Lewis. It's the Arabian Nights for women! I loved it! (Just have patience with the gathering of the heroes. It takes a while.)
