Summary

Farthing Wood is being bulldozed and a drought means the animals no longer have anywhere to live or drink.

Fox, Badger, Toad, Tawny Owl, Mole and the other animals band together and leave their ancestral home and set off to move to a far-away nature reserve.

Their journey is full of adventure and fraught with disasters: a fire, a storm, a treacherous river crossing and a hunt. The animals must unite in adversity and in doing so they learn about each other’s habits and limitations.

This is a story about tolerance, cooperation, survival and friendship from Colin Dann, which inspired the major BBC children’s series of the 1990s. The Animals of Farthing Wood is one of the most popular animal stories in children’s literature and is still in print nearly 35 years after first publication.

Odyssey

A delightful story full of highs and lows a few tears and ending with triumph. Humans don’t come out very pleasant but that is like it is in the real world.n

Brilliant book

Remember reading this as a child, loved it then, more so now - you can truly appreciate the brutal honesty aimed at us greedy humans.

This is when kids books where real

Remember reading this as a child, the book that got me into reading. This audio version is true to the text and the alternate voices for chapters is a nice change.

Forgot just how brutal the story is though considering it's aimed at very small children (the animal characters for instance are just name after their species, so you get Fox, Badger and Mole).

It is true to life though and I think children will like the fact it's not a whitewashed sanitised view of the animal kingdom.

It has dated a little though (for instance on the male characters are allowed a drink when they find the alcoholic beverage) but it's off its time and there's nothing too bad in it.

childhood favourite

interesting having 2 narrators alternate reading chapters but an enjoyable listen
remember it from being a kid
quite apt for our current environmental situation and awareness for children for the impact humans are having on the environment

Absolutely beautiful story

I had never read/heard the story before and I was absolutely enthralled. Made me think how humans are taking over the habitat of many wild animals and the struggles they have to survive. Particularly the chapter about the crop fields and lack of insects due to pesticides. Quite sad actually. I thought the narration was good from both parties. Would highly recommend.
