Summary

Politics has always been a dirty game. Now justice is, too.

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst 'cancer cluster' in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

Probably The Best Grisham Ever !

I rarely write reviews as my opinions are not that useful ( my wife says ) but on this occasion and for this book , I felt I should .

Grisham is a wonderful storyteller and his usage of allegory within the prose , is seemingly a prophetic nod to current day events in Flint, Michigan .

The narrator is one of those wonderful speakers who manages to change his voice pattern, cadence and tone to match the mood of each individual character . Simply sublime .

I loved this book. I made excuses to drive to the shops just to keep listening . It has a strong political message and yet Grisham manages to avoid sounding preachy .

Please listen to it. You WILL love it...

Superb

Thought provoking and disturbing to see how legitimate democracy can be corrupted. Thought provokingly brilliant.

Food for thoughts

Different angles on a highly controversial topic. Ego vs ethics.
Are today's super rich emotionally bankrupt? I enjoyed the story and the performance of the reader was very good.

VERY DISAPPOINTING AND DEPRESSING ENDING

For me the wholly miserable ending spoilt what would otherwise have been a great story. I really needed a “happy ending” for this one and felt robbed as the ending was rushed and left me very disappointed for the first time with a Grisham novel. I am still loyal to Grisham and will still read them but not a feel good for me and I will be more cautious in rushing for the next one. Cannot fault Michael Beck - as ever.

Interesting.

I found this book a little wordy and like a supreme court election manual. I enjoyed but it is less story driven for me. The end is also obvious which usually isn't the case for John Grisham.
If you are interested in supreme court election this book is for you!

Fantastic Read

The best Grisham I’ve read. A compelling read from start to finish. Although fiction it’s a sad part of modern life that it really could happen.

Not my favourite Grisham

I found this book at times quite a challenge to listen to. The storyline was intriguing but went on too long and found it hard to concentrate and was frequently having to rewind. But that’s only my opinion and I will remain a big fan of John Grisham.
One point I must put over is the fact that a previous I review read did somewhat spoil my enjoyment by revealing the conclusion of the story. So please if reviewing please do not spoil it for other people.

Very very slow

Very slow and drawn out and relative a slog to keep interested in not one of Grisham's best
