Summary

The grand master of gripping fiction is back. International No.1 bestseller Ken Follett returns to Kingsbridge with an epic tale of revolution and a cast of unforgettable characters.

Revolution is in the air

1792. A tyrannical government is determined to make England a mighty commercial empire. In France, Napoleon Bonaparte begins his rise to power, and with dissent rife, France’s neighbours are on high alert.

Kingsbridge is on the edge

Unprecedented industrial change sweeps the land, making the lives of the workers in Kingbridge’s prosperous cloth mills a misery. Rampant modernization and dangerous new machinery are rendering jobs obsolete and tearing families apart.

Tyranny is on the horizon

Now, as international conflict nears, a story of a small group of Kingsbridge people – including spinner Sal Clitheroe, weaver David Shoveller and Kit, Sal’s inventive and headstrong son – will come to define the struggle of a generation as they seek enlightenment and fight for a future free from oppression . . .

Taking the listener straight into the heart of history with the fifth novel in the ground-breaking Kingsbridge series, The Armour of Light is master storyteller Ken Follett’s most ambitious novel to date.

Not as gripping as other books in series

I found the beginning to be really good and boring towards the end.
Struggled to finish the last hour and half.
Narrators are excellent.

Not One of His Best

I am a big Ken Follett fan and I have read all the Kingsbridge novels. The book seems to be 3 or 4 love stories over the ages wrapped up with the odd bit of quite interesting history - combination act etc To be honest once I realised you missed nothing by winding on the badly written relationship scenes eg 'he realised how much he missed her when he wasn't with her, and how happy he was when they were together. Maybe he was in love' Missing all of this really stepped up the pace. The book is over 20 hours long and could have been edited down to maybe 12 hours

Very enjoyable

One of the stronger entry into the Kingsbridge cannon, like the other it would work well as a stand alone.

It here’s a large cast of characters that can become confusing at times, I wish it would have come with a list of of them all and possibly family tees in the notes section

Good book but worst in series

It’s hard to beat the other books in Ken’s marvellous Kingsbridge series and this certainly doesn’t do it. I don’t agree with many of the other reviews saying that it’s awful and I adored John Lee’s narration as always, however…

The character establishment could have taken longer in the early years (and fattened up the book while he was at it).

The era also lends itself to quite a few other themes Ken might have explored with his characters.

Having said that, I will always enjoy revisiting my favourite fictional town and grateful that Ken has given us another, and hopefully not the last, excursion there.

Another corker from Follett

Carrying on the series that started in the tenth century with the prequel to Pillars of the Earth, the magnificent tale that launched all this.
The historical research is very interesting and there are characters that as usual, you become invested in and root for. The scenes about Waterloo get in your head and scroll like a film. Does not grab you like the first books but worth a listen to finish the series.

Not as good as the others in the series

I didn’t think this book quite lived up to its predecessors. Ken follett normally does an extraordinary job of character development, making me feel so invested in each character while also learning about these epic historical moments. This book however didn’t go deep enough into the characters for me.

Wonderful historical yarn

Loved the characterisation of imagined citizens brought to life. The harsh cruelty reflective of the times made this a painful listen at times but everything falls into place eventually!!!

An excellent book but …

I really enjoyed the storey but the narrator was irritating and spoiled the enjoyment of the book.
