Summary

Levison Wood's most personal story yet, as he shares his most valuable rules to live life by, learned from 15 years travelling through 100 countries.

In The Art of Exploration, ex-soldier and explorer Levison Wood collates all the lessons he has learned from his journeys so far. Having written five books on his individual journeys, Levison recalls the most important learning points, on themes ranging from leadership and team-building to conceptual risk and spirituality, drawing on examples and anecdotes from across continents and cultures.

Levison has always been inspired by the travels and tales of legendary explorers from Livingstone, Shackleton and Scott to modern-day figures like Ranulph Fiennes and John Blashford-Snell, and passes on lessons he has learned both from them and his own experiences on the road, to the next generation of explorers.

'By travelling at the slowest means on my journeys I have had the joy and pleasure of meeting thousands of inspiring and hopeful individuals along the way, in some of the most poverty-stricken and war-torn countries in the world. It's from these humbling characters - shepherds, soldiers and fishermen; and my walking companions like Boston, the Congolese refugee and Binod my Nepali guide that I have learnt so much about how to approach life both on the road and back home.'

Many lessons of course are learned the hard way, through trial and error - and making plenty of mistakes. It's through tragedy and loss that the biggest lessons are learned. In this audiobook he talks about his own regrets and blunders that have resulted in growth and development and made him a better person. The Art of Exploration will bare all on the tough times and how Levison ended up dealing with them, providing both a reflective and entertaining account of life on the road.

His Best So Far!

Levison Wood speaks with absolute authenticity. He has an incredible pedigree when it comes to travel and adventure writing but I can’t quite get over the line when it comes to him being an ‘Explorer’. It’s probably an uneasy moniker in the modern age where seemingly everything in the world can be ‘discovered’ with a few taps on a keyboard. For me, an Explorer discovers something new then tells us about it. His experiences go far beyond dangerous backpacking but I’m yet to read about one of his discoveries.

That aside, this book draws upon his experiences in the British Army and his travel exploits to deliver meaningful, thoughtful and practical advice on leadership and self-improvement. I really enjoyed this book - his narration can at times seem like a long series of announcements, with the start of sentences revving up before dipping down again. But he’s not an actor, and it would be unfair to judge him too harshly in this way. He does a good enough job with the best sections where he is clearly reminiscing and not just reading. I’ve read all of his books I would say with some confidence this is his best so far.

Ok

It's good if it's your first Levison's book... I felt it was a recap or summary of all the previous books.

Great book filled with the wisdom of a well traveled individual.

This was a fantastic read which was perfect in length and achieved everything it set out to do. The book is filled with great stories, both first hand accounts from Lev himself and other fascinating stories from adventurers throughout time. I found it not only enjoyable but genuinely inspiring.

Great listen!

Really enjoyed this, there was more philosophy and depth than I was perhaps expecting, which was a really pleasant surprise. I listened to the book in a day, really easy to listen to and some fantastic stories! Thanks!

Extremely Good Book

Extremely well put together book that was read so well by the Author himself that it never felt like he was reading a book to you but just reciting many great tales and superb life lessons along the way. This I felt was also the kind of book that you could just pick up and open up anywhere in it, read and take something away from so in addition to the audiobook I have also purchase the book as well
