A marked improvement on vol 1.
It is hardly fair to comment that the author fails to engage in sufficient detail, with his issues, and much of what I heard through the night deals with controversies at a level that should, at least, give an atheist their bang for their buck!
I am now utterly convinced that Bowen is a Christian double agent taking on a project that Liberal Christians need to undertake in the face of bigoted right-wing American evangelicals and their sous-dissents theology of dogmatic fideism.
What gives the game away, however, is the list of acknowledgements at the end: virtually all either aboutvsupport or the provision of ammunition from various atheist resources: it’s primarily about book sales!!!
As for Bowen’s bow to minority interests, black and feminist theologies are nowadays well and often very ably represented by American scholars so it’s obvious that he’s seeking to address the notorious right wing in both our countries, who embarrass every thinking oerson Christian or not. This I think he undertakes with more conviction and sureness if aim than in his previous volume and I wish him well with vol 3 though I probably won’t bother to read it since the ground is already well covered by Anglican scholars such as John Rogerson et al.
A really useful resource is Robert Alter’s translation and commentary on the Hebrew Bible which is also available as a talking book and is written from a Jewish standpoint and I recommend it for people who wish to pursue their interest in this subject.

fact packed but a dull listen
I liked the content of this book (audiobook) but found it a struggle to get through. I don't know, seems to oscillate between being a bit patronising in over explaining simple stuff, then veering into information overload which is so long and convoluted it's hard to even follow what the original subject matter was.
Overall, an interesting book, but could have been done better.
