About this listen

A tautly plotted mystery of dark family secrets, perfect for fans of Kate Morton.

Seraphine Mayes and her brother, Danny, are known as the summer-born Summerbournes: the first set of summer twins to be born at Summerbourne House. But on the day they were born their mother threw herself to her death, their au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark-cloaked figures and a stolen baby.

Now 25, and mourning the recent death of her father, Seraphine uncovers a family photograph taken on the day the twins were born featuring both parents posing with just one baby. Seraphine soon becomes fixated with the notion that she and Danny might not be twins after all, that she wasn't the baby born that day and that there was more to her mother's death than she has ever been told....

Why did their beloved au pair flee that day?

Where is she now?

Does she hold the key to what really happened?

Massive plot holes but a nice read anyway

very shallow characters. No real character development. I did not become invested in any of the characters, nor did the 9 others in my book group.

Loved it

Wow! This was a brilliant story. Twists and turns throughout. Sadly the narration wasn't brilliant and my Alexa kept reacting to Alex!!.
Can't wait for Emma's next book 😊

Enjoyable narrative, difficult characters!

I was quite gripped by this book quickly, it’s well preformed. But I also found the main character, saraphani something, wildly annoying, selfish and really driven by greed. She’s very difficult to get behind, particularly with her entitlement with the house. The rest of the characters are underdeveloped and a bit dull so there’s no one to really root for!But if you can accept that story’s not bad! Lots of little twists and turns, gets somewhat unrealistic but I didn’t mind. The writer is very descriptive which I liked, made the scenes easy to picture. A gripping, easy listen if you can get past the more anoying characters!

A good listen

I did enjoy this book, though the story was relatively predictable, it still had enough of a mystery to keep me listening. It was also almost creepy at points; with its unknown visitors and unanswered questions. I would recommend to anyone who likes a family drama or a Agatha Christie novel.

Absolutely Captivating

Yes, absolutely captivating. Especially as the story continues to build. Was so engrossed that I didn't want to to end. And boy what an ending! Really glad I picked this! The narrator was stellar!

Well that was unexpected

I didn’t really know what to expect from the blurb. Frankly, the plot was a bit crackers but I’d say it’s worth a listen if you are up for some on-the-beach-style nonsense. Narration was really good - Keeley was able to narrate both POV distinctly and age the same characters in different timelines very well. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers!

Awful !

I gave up after wasting two hours on this book. The final straw was the long drawn out description of nursery tea and shepherds pie. Not for me. I will be returning.
