Summary

Writing under the ambiguous pseudonyms ‘Waif Wander’ and ‘W. W.’, Mary Fortune penned a staggering 500 detective stories over a 40-year span, from 1868 to 1908. Narrated by the fictional detective Mark Sinclair, the series comprises Sinclair’s memoirs as he looks back through a “detective’s album” of mugshots from his long police career. This volume includes eight classic stories from one of the pioneers in the detective writing genre.

A nice glimpse into the past.

If you like period writing, then you’ll probably enjoy this a little more than I did.
The story of fine and interesting, but it’s a little dated and slow and the detective doesn’t actually do much detective work other than show up, get told who did what and then arrest them. There’s a lot more ink penned in the backstory to the victims. Again, this is fine.
The narrator tells the story really well and makes the book enjoyable. The foreign accents could use a little work though.
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Looking back

Robbie Smith did a good job as narrator for this book of history.

This book takes you back to the time of Australian gold rush. It brings the life of detective Mark Sinclair as he reflects back on his long police career.

It has unexpected twists and adventure in a , collection of short stories.
